Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Pinnacle Studio Version 8 is the 2002 release of the company's video-editing software. The application has an elegant, simple design, making it easy for beginners to work their way in, while still offering quite sophisticated facilities for the more experienced.

There are three main parts to the Studio 8 display. First there's the album, which can show video clips, transitions, sound clips or DVD menu screens. To the right of this is a preview panel that can run your video at any stage during the editing process. Below both of these is the storyboard, where you drag-and-drop the various elements that make up your finished video. This display can be switched to show a timeline or a file list in case you prefer working with either of these aids. As you call up other functions of the program, such as sound facilities or titling, the appropriate editing windows slide up or zoom out as needed.

Video capture calls up a separate display, where you can control your video camera from within the software and pull in just the scenes you want to add to your edit. At the other end of the process you can burn your completed video to a CD or DVD, again from within the program. --Simon Williams

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Results but not with Analogue...., 14 Jan 2003
This review is from: Pinnacle Studio 8.0 (CD-ROM)
I bought this with a Linx cable to record old 8MM Camcorder footage onto CD. It worked but the sound was out of synch and when I used the 3d Hollywood FX that they give you with it between scenes it froze my system ( and not much does ..its a P4,1800Mhz,64 mb 3d Graphics card, 512 mb ram - I wasn't very happy..) However, I had decided to move on to a Digital Cam corder (Sony) and upgraded my software and bought the full Hollywood FX package - the results are simply stunning. Using a Firewire card to download the footage it stores it well, the 3d effects between scenes are incredible ( one shot wrapping aroud a 3d balloon and spinning off into the distance etc as the new starts) I now enjoy recording our home movies and have used the camera and Pinnacle for work projects to great acclaim. I have only upgraded my system in the past year and I can see that Pinnacle stops everything else working in the world on it so on a slightly older system I think you would struggle - its power hungry for obvious reasons and even now occasionally drops the program if it all gets too much. None the less, this is exceptional fun and the price even with upgrades etc is hardly prohibitive - if you have the system and I would use my set up as a sort of minimum for this - then go for it - if not I can see why it would make you tear your hair out - hope this helps.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pinnacle Studio 8, 12 Feb 2003
This review is from: Pinnacle Studio 8.0 (CD-ROM)
This software forms the core part of many Pinnacle home video editing products - the diffrence is that the others also include hardware interfaces enabling you to connect your PC to a digital and/ or analogue camcorder. Having read some of the earlier comments I was concerned about bugs and in fact I did have to spend a lot of time tweaking settings and experimenting until eventually I got everything working. However there are some camcorders and PC's that just wont work with this software so my advice is to get hold of a free 30 day time limited trial version, available from many PC/ video magazines (I found copies on two magazines this month), lock yourself away with your PC and camcorder for 24 hours, read the help screens, log on to Pinnacle's online help and user forums (both much more extensive than the help function in the software itself)and be prepared for a long hard slog. Also make sure you perform all the end to end processes that you are interested in - making an edited videotape, making a video CD, making a DVD etc, to ensure that everything really is working properly. For example dont assume that, if you have managed to burn a disc, it will play in your DVD player and that the menu buttons will work - check first. Also dont assume that, if you have managed to send edited footage back to your camcorder, it will look OK once you have transferred it to a VHS tape - again, please check everything. Once you have got a bona fide end product that works to your satisfaction, go ahead and buy the product and load it over the trial version. This should preserve all your technical settings and mean you wont have to start again!
Having been through all this and come out the other side I have to say that I am impressed with the capabilities of this software. Before I got involved I thought Microsoft Moviemaker did everything a rank amatuer like me would ever need, but Studio 8 has a lot of extra functionality that you dont realise you need until you try it. I would recommend it but please do be prepared for a frustrating and time consuming experience and whatever you do dont buy it before trying out the trial first.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but creaky, 4 Nov 2002
This review is from: Pinnacle Studio 8.0 (CD-ROM)
This is a superbly designed and set out piece of software. It seems so simple to use that you can sometimes forget the depth of functionality and complexity of tasks behind the scenes. I am new to digital editing and found this package just a breeze. My only gripe is that it can just crash at times for no apparent reason.

This can sometimes be caused by upgrades from previous versions with HFX installed. If you want full features, ease of use and quick production get the product. A further piece of advice - follow the top tips that come with the manual to make the most of the product and improve production quality
