2.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't do what it claims 20 Dec 2008
Verified Purchase
I bought this because it is claimed in the specs that it will handle HD with no loss of quality. But this is not true. It does not have 'smart rendering' so insists on re rendering AVCHD even if the output is set to match the input. The result is a quality drop and very extended rendering times compared to products that do 'smart render'.
Another astonishing failing is that despite claiming Dolby 5.1 support, it is incapable of passing 5.1 from cameras that record in this to the edited result! It merges it to old 2 channel stereo.
This is going back to Amazon I'm afraid. Just not fit for purpose.
The product itself was stable enough on my Quad 6600 with the current patch added.

4.0 out of 5 stars Studio 12 ultimate 3 Sep 2008
After slating Studio 11, (see my review)for it's lack of AVCHD capabilities, I was impressed with the way it handled DV footage. For this reason I bought Studio 12 and the fact you get Boris Graffiti, Montage, Magic bullets, Vitascene and a green screen which all work very well with Standard DV. I have made a few interesting DV shorts, however, I decided to load some AVCHD files that were left over from using Studio 11 and to my surprise Studio 12 did quite a good job in handling them. It is still early days but I think it just might work, I am in the process of making a short High def film, so far so good. Studio 12 is well worth the money for it's DV capabilities, it is much better than Studio 11, add to this better handling of AVCHD and Pinnacle might have got it right..
My system is:-
Core 2 duo 3.0 Ghz CPU
2 gb Ram
Win XP Service Pack 2
SATA hard drive for operating system.
SATA hard drive for video footage.
512 mb Graphics card.
Gigabyte GA 35 Series MoBo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Top marks for Pinnacle Studio Ultimate12 30 Sep 2008
I bought this a few months ago and it has been fab so far not one problem to say about it ,I use the firewire port from my camcorder to my pc,it imports the video perfect no problems at all, edits it ,can add music to it,never crashes can burn it to disc or hard drive not a problem, the finish product is always 100%.I would recommended this software to anyone,I have always had pinnacle to edit my videos as I do weddings in my spare time also events,I believe pinnacle is easy to understand & easy to use,yes over the years some of the Pinnacle software has not been up to standard, but I would say the major problems for people is to use the firewire port not usb port, your computer has to be top spec for taking video footage eg: lots of memory, good graphics card like nvidia & your hard drive has to be at least 7200rpm & over 200GB for taking video footage if you have all of this you should begin making great movies

1.0 out of 5 stars not so good 2 Jun 2009
Verified Purchase
I bought this from Amazon just after purchasing a panasonic sd9, I also purchased the corel editing software too.

I have to say after almost a year of crashes and in that year not edited sucessfully any footage I returned the product back to Amazon who were so kind to give a refund. A year you say, this was the time being messed around by pinnacle who blamed the creative soundcard or some other hardware aspect. At the time I had an Intel q6600 and after spending hundreds upgrading to much faster processor and memory and graphics card plus all the testing utilities discovered it was the software itself.

I purchased also Sony movie studio 9 and having sucessfully rendered a project on the day i received it from amazon knew that it was not a hardware issue.

This proved my camera format was fine and that the hardware was fine and essentially that the Pinnacle software was not fit for purpose and should never have been released particularly as it was marked vista ready. I hate to slate it as I used it for standard definition for years but for avchd work get the Sony product from Amazon.

It was so good I upgraded to Vegas Pro. I would not recommend the Pinnacle software. The key is try a trial version before you buy but if you did not then at least Amazon are supportive, thats what makes Amazon a great supplier.

But if like me you invested in high definition and what a reliable product that has superb support then go for Sony. I would point out I am not biased with Sony other than the fact that it worked for me and that having had constant crashes with Pinnacle and also corel editing software I think now I can say I am well experienced to say this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good for home editing 26 Oct 2008
If you are looking for a cheap product for professional home editing this is your choice, for more professional I'd not recommend this. For me it does the job. Though while I gain more skills I'll move on to Sony Vegas or Final Cut.

Some effects are useless because they look so crappy, but some of the color correction and other picture manipulation work really well.

1.0 out of 5 stars Hopelessly bug-ridden - AGAIN 1 Dec 2008
Verified Purchase
Typical Pinnacle fare unfortunately - more fool me. Ridden with bugs - at first it seems great, until you actually need to do anything such as change the speed of a clip or render to AVI. Mine will not do either, even with the latest patch applied.

I had a mainstream setup as well - motherboard, CPU, soundcard, DVD writer - everything except the power supply is mainstream componentry, selected with the sole intention of making it the most low-risk option I could. What a waste of time.

No doubt there are still those at the Pinnacle forum who think it's user error - it's a joke. This is consumer-level software, it should just install and run (like almost everything else).

I should have got a Mac and Final Cut. Next time, I will.
