Getting this device to work is pretty easy - which is good because the instructions are far from all encompassing. For TV viewing, only the top quality is worth using, and this is only just about average.

I initially used this with an external hard disk, and it was fine. I also bought a 16GB memory stick, and this was more of a problem - well actually it did not work. The device just refused to recognise it.

Pinnacle support subsequently admitted that it worked with some memory sticks, but not with others. To date I have not got any kind of hint as to which it which.

The weakness of Pinnacle is their customer support, and this was no exception. Initially they kept referring me to the same FAQ, which was irrelevant. Eventually they just said to use a different memory stick. Marvellous! It would not hurt to publish a list of memory stick suppliers that they recommend, then at least you'd know you were not wasting your money.

Pinnacle Video Transfer is a decent experience when it works but more often than not it will just leave you fuming in frustration as it stops recording mid-operation for no apparent reason. Worse still everything you've recorded up to that point will be lost. So for example if it stops recording 2.5 hours into the transfer of a 3 hour VHS tape (and this will often happen) then you've lost the 2.5 hours work and have to go back and start the process all over again.

Similarily even if you manage to get it to record all the way to the end of a tape successfully the item is so tempermental that when you press the button to stop recording everything can still be lost. It's really a case of being on tenderhooks with the PVT right until the minute you actually see the finished clip playing on your laptop. The most frustrating thing is that there seems to be no apparent pattern or reason as why to why it fails or why it succeeds so no matter how careful you are with your preperation you never know what the outcome is going to be. You could play it the same tape on the same record quality with the same USB output stick and one time it will fail half-way thru and the next time it will work successfully until completion.

Furthermore there is no playback function on the device. It's literally just a black box. Signal comes in and signal goes out which means you've got to hope that the thing is recording your tape correctly and there is no way of checking how things are progressing until the recording session is complete and the usb stick or external drive etc is removed to a laptop for review.

PVT audio also went out of sync when I used an external HDD as the output device so I had to opt for memory sticks from that point onwards.

Bottome line is PVT is Very frustrating product to use due to it's tempermental nature. You're almost afraid to FastForward a tape thru the adverts whilst recording or even touch the thing when it's in operation in case it decides to just stop working. Don't believe all the promotional blurb/clips on youtube that make its operation look like a walk in the park.

The problems are less frequent when recording straight from tv but like I've alluded to earlier if you are buying this item with a view to digitising all your old vhs tapes then you could have all kinds of problems ahead of you.

A MUST HAVE!!!! 21 May 2008
I brought this product 4 weeks ago, its brilliant. l have been using it to Record TV and Camcorder footage to a hard drive. The wonderful thing about it is l can put recordings onto my newphews PSP and my ipod, and you dont have to be a clever clogs to do it. Actually, l must say, l am away quite often and have to do my bit to meet clients in the evening, so l take it with me and record TV programs from hotel television, straight to my hard drive and watch it when l get back in. THIS IS A MUST HAVE.

Awesome Kit
What a great piece of kit this is, you can record TV directly to your External HDD as you watch it. It's so small too so many people don't even notice it when they come round. Read more

Excellent product, but...
This is an excellent product. It is easy to use, small and the converted video is excellent quality. However you can only copy to a FAT32 formatted external harddrive. Read more

Not worth the money
Overall, you would be buying a very basic but overpriced item from a company with notoriously indifferent customer support.
