Inspector Clouseau (that's bound to be misspelled) has, after many years of incompetent service in the French police force (whose name I won't even attempt to spell), managed to drive his Chief Inspector, Dreyfus (there's another one) insane. So Dreyfus is in the insane asylum and Clouseau is Chief Inspector. As the film starts, Dreyfus is being assessed and it's anticipated that he'll be considered mentally fit enough to leave the asylum and resume his life. That is until Clouseau arrives to help. He and Dreyfus meet by the lake and there follows the most hilarious catalogue of disasters which drive the poor mad man back over the brink. He manages to get out of the asylum anyway and spends the rest of the film trying to get Clouseau assassinated by threatening the world powers with a doomsday machine. As usual, Clouseau manages to seem to be the hero who saves the day, by his accustomed combination of stupidity and luck.
I hope Amazon will stock Region 2 versions of this film in the near future. Even though I've watched it several times, each time I laugh till I feel sick and dizzy and my whole torso aches (it's hard to breath when the comedy comes so thick and fast). Of course, it's a matter of opinion and others may disagree, but I think this is the funniest film ever made and I recommend it to anyone who shares my sense of humour.
It is side-splittingly funny. Sellers at his best and a great supporting cast with some well-known faces - get it.
With Blake Edwards still firmly in the director's chair and Lesley-Anne Down playing the glamour, it continues the phenomenal success of the series with a laugh a minute. Although there are some signs of its wearing thin, the series put another film in the can two years later, the last in the series (apart from the discredited "Trail of the Pink Panther" in 1982, cobbled together from previously unused film).
This is another film classic from a highly successful crew, which, despite its few bonuses, will continue to provide laughs for years to come now that it is on DVD.
