5.0 out of 5 stars Good one! 22 Jun 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
Being a long time fan of the original Peter Sellers films I was thrilled to bits with Steve Martin's own unique take on this classic character. Thoroughly entertaining! If you're in two minds about buying this - then don't be. Just buy it! You will regret it rien!

By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAME TOP 100 REVIEWER

Having succeeded at the box-office where Alan Arkin, Ted Wass and Roberto Begnini failed, it wasn't too surprising that Steve Martin would return for a sequel to his 2006 Pink Panther, but it's a far from promising sign for this outing that where each of the previous films had a proper title, even if it was a simple matter of adding a word like Return, Revenge or Trail to the title, the best they could do here was stick a `2' on the end. Yet overall, The Pink Panther 2 turns out to be an improvement both on Martin's first outing and Blake Edwards' increasingly desperate non-Peter Sellers sequels in the 80s and 90s.

Some problems from the first film have been addressed - Kevin Kline's unmemorable Inspector Dreyfus' has been replaced by a more frustrated but still not homicidal John Cleese, Jean Reno's sidekick has a bit more to do this time and new director Harold Zwart is a bit better at staging the pratfalls than Shawn Levy even if he can't disguise some very obvious stunt doubling - while others persist - Martin still doesn't have much of a grip on the character and his accent still isn't funny. The first couple of reels aren't very promising. Part of the problem is that where Sellers realised the joke was that Clouseau not only didn't realise he was an idiot but actually thought he was cool as well as brilliant, his Clouseau isn't played straight enough, with too much face pulling to emphasise it's a comedy but too often coming across like the kind of performance in children's television shows that even children find patronising.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cringingly bad 1 Mar 2009
To see such a heavyweight cast appear in this appalling farce is tragic. The laughs can be counted on one hand.

No one would expect a sophisticated plot, but the film is just a tapestry of unfunny sketches bundled together with no intention of treating the audience with any respect.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great family film with plenty of laughs 5 Aug 2009
Steve Martin and the cast are great, bringing the Pink Panther up to date for the current generation. Of course Steve Martin will never portray the role of Clouseau in the same way as Sellers, because he is not Sellars! He adds a new perspective to the role, interpreting Clouseau in his own unique way. The whole family enjoyed this film and there were lots of funny moments.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sweet Jesus! 12 April 2009
My new top three most painful experiences both real and imagined:

1. Watching Pink Panther II.
2. Using a hand drill and a red hot 1/2mm drill bit to drill holes in my toe nails.
3. Replacing all my teeth with amalgam fillings and eating a four course meal made up entirely of BacoFoil.

Two comedy greats, John Cleese and Steve Martin, flushing their comedy credibility down the toilet.

This is no Peter Sellers that's for sure!

1.0 out of 5 stars Woeful 20 Feb 2009
By Anna
Even writing more than a sentence or 2 feels like a waste of energy.

With problem children, when they act out, the thing to do is ignore them; don't acknowledge their behaviour and they eventually stop. Would that it could work with this film.

It's so appalling, even John Cleese looks bad. John Cleese! I ask you! It's not his fault. He plays Clouseau's professional rival, and he is absolutely wasted on this. The cast, in fact, is stellar, with Alfred Molina, Emily Mortimer, Andy Garcia and Jean Reno also taking centre stage. All wasted.

They go in search of "The Tornado" - a master thief who has stolen the Pink Panther and other priceless things, such as the Shroud of Turin... and, actually, I can't be bothered to pay any more attention to this.

It's double pants and Peter Sellers is owed the very grovelliest of apologies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally poor and unfunny 13 Mar 2009
I only went to see this film because John Cleese was in it, not for Steve Martin's attempts at playing a role that Peter Sellers had already worked to perfection.

John Cleese was awful. Not funny in the least, and much too old and frail for this. To watch this once fine comedy actor struggle to bring absolutely nothing to his role as Dreyfus was both sad and embarrassing.

The humour, if one can exaggerate so much as to call it that, was a mix of toilet jokes, political correctness nonsense and unbelieveable farce. Steve Martin portrays his character as a sort of objectionable pervert.

The "Dream Team" storyline is an insult to the memory of Blake Edwards and smacks of everything that is artificial and phoney about Hollywood today.

My advice would be to stick to the real talent of Peter Sellers, Herbert Lom, Bert Kwok and Blake Edwards, and not waste any money on this very poor excuse for a comedy.

Awful, really awful. I would have given it no stars if the rating option had allowed this, but I am forced to give a one star minimum rating.
