Atom Heart Cash Cow 22 May 2005
Format:DVD
I can only assume the previous five-star review was written by someone from the company that issued this DVD. I have known and loved the Atom Heart Mother LP for thirty years, but I find myself hard pressed to find thirty seconds of pleasure in this DVD. Firstly, the footage is of very poor quality. Most of it taken from the KQED TV broadcast from 1970, and never officially released. What we have here are short bursts of film never lasting more than a few seconds. The earlier material is available on the Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story. The Bath Festival footage is frustratingly used in very short sections, though the sound quality is not too bad. There are one or two vaguely interesting insights into the making of the title track, but generally there is nothing new for anyone familliar with the album. The DVD is formless, directionless and looks cheap. It may have been better to try and lead up to a complete showing of the Bath Festival film, as you don't get to hear any music in full. There is an overall feeling of cynicism to the production, from some of the flippant comments from "Krusher" to the feeling that this is simply a cash-in. I can't wait to get rid of it.

First off, this is unauthorised product, which means that the members of Pink Floyd do not participate. Generally, you want to look out for this sort of thing, as there is next to no music and it's largely no-name talking heads sharing their opinions. With most of these critical reviews, you're better off discussing this with your mates or better yet, picking up a book.

However, this entry does contain some music, and at least some comments from David Gilmour. The production values are high for this kind of project, and the analysis of Atom Heart Mother runs far longer than the album itself. Most of the footage interviews the composer Ron Geesin, and there's a lot of technical talk about the arrangement of the music. You won't see much in the way of performance footage, just a clip or two here and there. You have to really love Atom Heart Mother to find this analysis compelling.

All of these "critical reviews" should be approached with a wary eye. As the film makers do not have the rights to the music they can only use small tidbits, so if you're looking for real concert footage or interviews with band members, you'll be sorely disappointed. This is one is a bit better than most, but caveat emptor most emphatically applies.

I would be very surprised if Pink Floyd are happy with this mess. Just another album review with no real thought or direction. Some one else is trying rip off money from someone elses work. Its all old out of focus clips and totally boring.

Dont Buy It !!!!
