Product Description

BBC Review

After the critically acclaimed debut album Mejico, Maxico, The Mexican Institute Of Sound's second album Piñata offers a larger, richer and sexier sound than its predecessor.

Piñata is a medley of vibrant Latin rhythms fused together with rap and deep beats, a risky venture for any musician but here it works. The raps, both in English and Espaniol compliment the Latin Funk that we find on many of the tracks, producing a wild clash of musical landscapes. From Cumbia, Cha Cha Cha and Danzon, to Baile Funk, Hip Hop, Electro to cut & paste beats.

Camilo Lara's Mexican Institute Of Sound are already receiving acclaim on the other side of the Atlantic, with the New York Times and Rolling Stone Mexico both recognizing the importance of this album and The Mexican Institute Of Sound. Camilo Lara leads and supports this one man institution with guest appearances from some of Latin America's finest musical luminaries, Café Tacuba from Mexico and Argentina's Babasonicos.

Camilo Lara takes the listener through a tour of Mexico city with a rich texture of musical genres that extend further than the subject matter of Mexico City. Without a doubt this album will be huge in Mexico and Latin America due to its ability to capture and reflect the times perfectly through music. In terms of the non Hispanic audience, it is yet to be seen whether this album will be commercially successful in the UK.

This album does not just push the boundaries, it runs at them with full force. It demands attention, dancing with the listener, at times coy and at other parts seductive. Piñata is a worthy and satisfying follow up to Mejico, Maxico . Imagine Gomez Manu Chao and The Avalanches fused into one enormous sound and you are almost there. The Mexican Institute Of Sound is a well deserved and fitting name for Camilo Lara's one man musical landscape. This album will truly challenge your current perceptions of the Latin American musical genre. --Johnny Lais

Fun Listening! 4 July 2008
By Gary Peterson - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Not terribly long ago I purchased "Tijuana Sessions: Vol. 3." I loved it and followed up by ordering "Panoptica." It was equally good. Mexican Techno. I'd never heard of such a thing, but this was great music. I might indicate that I don't even like most Mexican music, but Mexican Techno is a world apart. Not long thereafter, the "Pinata" CD by the Mexican Institute of Sound started appearing on my list of recommendations. Out of curiosity, I bought it.

The "MIS/Piñata" CD is great stuff! I find it very hard to categorize the music. It's Latin to a much greater degree than the other albums mentioned and it's definitely electronica, but it's nothing like I've ever listened to and is a delight. It's a very strange and unusual album. All the lyrics are in Spanish, and I have no idea what they're about, but the Spanish lyrics present no problem at all in enjoying the music. This album is just fun music to listen to. How else can I put it?

The music is constructed in the electronica fashion, but it's much less mechanical and repetitious than most techno and sounds a lot more human, rather than something that's been generated by a computer. It presents a very strange mixture of sounds. I can hear synthesizers, door bells, a harp, chimes, the spoken word, strange voices and snippets of traditional Mexican music all mixed together with some very strange unidentified sounds and put into some very unusual arrangements. But, the end result is appealing and enjoyable music that is nothing like I've ever heard before. One critic called it "a remarkable collage," and that is an ideal description.

After listening to it several times, I tried to make a list of my favorite songs and my least favorites. It was an exercise in futility. No song stands out as the best and there's not a bad track on the album. This CD just provides fun listening!

Viva MIS!! 25 July 2007
By Lil' Creeper - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I loved the first Mexican Institute of Sound (MIS) album 'Mejico Maxico', but the new album 'Pinata' is even better. This album is worth the price alone just for tracks like "El Microfono" and "Escribeme Pronto". Big ups to KCRW in Los Angeles for turning me on to a great electronic artist!
