Product Description

BBC Review

With cover art from the 'dangerously psychotic' school and a band photo that looks like the jazz-police arranged a parade of the guilty, Pimpoint, the latest from Soil & "Pimp" Sessions promises an emotional experience, and it delivers 100%.

This Tokyo-based outfit specialise in numbers that swerve deceptively from the familiar musical maps of classic 1950s hard bop into wilder, unexplored territory. Keeping a grip on conventional jazz styles, and following relatively unsurprising rhythms throughout, Josei takes control on most of the album's fourteen tracks, leading the team by means of his impressively skilled, inspired, rock solid piano playing, never allowing discipline to slip too far. That said however, there's enough freedom left in this jazz to satisfy the most demanding of purists when Motuharu cries through his sax or the wonderfully monickered Tabu Zombie squeezes another impossible run from his trumpet.

The band have a unique take on traditional bop, and re-focus progressions which are often seen either as clichés or classics in the West through their own occasionally funky lens. In doing so they compose completely new landscapes, with their revisiting of Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay" being only the most obvious example included here.

Slick, talented and perfectly turned out, S&"P"S manage to be both stylish masters of a retro sound and perfectly modern at the same time. The album's drop-deadly street attitude makes Pimpoint the perfect musical accompaniment to your next New York teenage hoodlum street rumble, maverick Chicago TV cop show or San Francisco muscle car chase. --Al Spicer

5.0 out of 5 stars Go on, try Death Jazz! 17 Nov 2007
Format:Audio CD
Having produced a rollercoaster of an album with 'Pimp Master' this was a new cut needing to live up to something big, bold, brash and bloody energetic. Well, having seen them live at The Jazz Cafe in June this year I simply had to get this album which Brownswood were helpfully selling at the venue!
And this new album doesn't dissapoint, full of that raw, full brass and sax sound (like Youngblood Brass Band) along with the keys fusing a latin-bop-funk catchy sound that is so uplifting. Try listening to this sitting down and not move your feet! Tracks A.I.E, Makuroke (Herbie Hancock 'Futureshock' -esque), Pluto and Funky Goldman are standout for me but it does depend what mood you are in - so talented in all sounds.
I urge you to buy the preceeding release 'Pimp Master' as well.

This is real in your face mixture of jazz, funk and rock from Japanese quintet Pimpoint. The tunes are all lively and played with real gusto and the solos are anything from straight ahed be-bop to Ornette Coleman on acid depending on how they felt at the time i guess! All pieces are originals except for Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay" which gets a lively rendition with some nice and fairly straight ahead solos. It's a fairly even mix of tracks with the full-on in your face rockish tracks definitely grabbing your attention more than the funky tracks of which some have that seventies cheesy feel to them (but are still good nevertheless) and all are played with real passion and intensity. For a fairly straight ahead jazz lineup of sax, trumpet, keyboards, base and drums they certainly deliver real some real heat and at times some crazy solos which i think makes them out on their own really.Definitely very different from our own creative jazz/rock type bands like Acoustic Ladyland,Polar Bear,Fraud etc and would go down an absoloute storm in a Live setting.
If you want some lively catchy tunes and high octane solos then this album will do for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible! 5 Nov 2007
Format:Audio CD
These guys played on the first episode of series 30 of Later...with Jools Holland - It was phenomenal! They showcased some breathtaking musicianship with some brilliant grooves and real energy (putting some of the other acts that night to shame!)

Listen to this music to put a smile on your face and get your blood pumping
