This was nostalgia for me because I bought the tape of volume one all those years ago.

There is an excerpt of Quentin Crisp delivering a withering criticism of "young people" which is worth a listen as well performance poetry from Atilla the stockbroker. The music is curious and diverse. Sad and wistful guitar tracks with Tracy Thorn, Ben Watt and the like - unusual tracks with electric drum sound and synthesisers. It feels like the cusp of a wave - music was evolving from punk/new romantic to the likes of the Smiths. It is worth a listen because it is interesting and entertaining.

When this came out on vinyl it bore a sticker PAY NO MORE THAN 99p.
Thus Cherry Red laid out its policies-the buyer would not be ripped off because this wasn't the corperates talking. So spending 5 weeks as the No 1 Indie album more or less got costs back.
A 2nd volume was issued in Japan only for some odd reason but its now the CD Age and everything is returned.
The accompanying video showed some of the artists like the Marine Girls,Jane & Barton, the Monochrome Set,Kevin Hewick with vintage ads thrown in.
Loses a star because of the boring standup comedian Attila The Stockbroker which can be disabled now its on CD
Though little of Cherry Red's product made the national charts at least 50 per cent scored on the Indie one.
Cherry Red's CD reissues all come with detailed booklets whereas previously you needed to read the music press for any sort of info

Originally issued in the early 80's this piece of vinyl was the only sampler that retuned to my turntable. Eclectic, formative, informative it captures the transition from punk to the intelligent pop of the 90's. And for completists there are some very early incarnations of EBTG dotted around. Now it's back, bigger (but this may not mean better) but still at a budget price (my album has the #1.99 sticker still on it)

I must've been dreaming. Apart from the strangely comforting visions of naked men with pig's heads being herded into fire-pens and the untold terror of dwarves selling fudge - I 'saw' something rather special.
I mean, where but in deep, confining, energizing sleep, could you dare to imagine a pop album busting at the seams with excellent songs by Felt, Eyeless in Gaza, Joe Crow, the Nightingales and Fantastic Something?

Waking to find said album (which from this time forward shall be known as the Cherry Red Compilation) actually does exist in the world is like waking up to Christmas every morning. All the harboured dread thoughts for the day ahead melt away into a kind of pre-caffeine utopia, all mellow and soothing. All healing.

So how good is it? Well, it starts with a great song by a normally moribund act named Five or Six - and this is major stuff.
Five or Six, usually dead in the water, begin the CRC adventure with a corker! Set's the tone magically for the adventure to follow.

There then follows one screamer after another; each mad, eccentric act tumbling over each other to reach the bedazzled listener. Indie to the nth degree but not really indie at all, if you see what I mean, the CRC, (if I HAVE to...) is chock full of clever little pop vignettes; lyrical, clipped and not segued in any way. Ie, caste-less, location-less, genre-less but brimming with simplicity and genius.
Putting Five or Six at the top is a vital indication of what the CRC's agenda is. Sheer bravado; - a fully backed -up statement of intent, so by the time you get to Felt's exhilarating 'Penelope Tree' you're completely ensconced. Completely drawn in to the CRC's fragilities and aplomb - by its very nature, a deep and many-layered treasure.
