Biography

Although the band was formed in Boston, Massachusetts in 1995 and was based there for many years, Fisher moved back to his native California and has been living in the high desert since 2006. The ensuing years have seen numerous incarnations of the band, both live and on record. But one of the most enduring partnerships seems to be the one Fisher has with Curry. In many ways Ghost Republic is ... Read more in Amazon's Willard Grant Conspiracy Store

I find some of the previous reviews incomprehensible.
This album strikes me, a long time fan of WGC, as a delightful return to form after the disappointment of Let it Roll. Next to Regard the End, I'd say Pilgrim Road represents this brilliant band at the peak of it's not inconsiderable powers.

This is a record long anticipated and on its release it doesn't disappoint. It marks a move away from the rockier tones of "Let it Roll" and ploughs a furrow similar to Regard The End, the band's magisterial offering from 2003 that remains their undoubted masterpiece. Whilst this record does not immediately appear to scale the heights achieved by songs as compelling and mournful as River In The Pines or The Ghost of the Girl In The Well it is nevertheless worthy of much attention and is far from the tuneless dirge implied by other reviewers on this site. On first listen a worthy and welcome release and a definite grower - do not dismiss it lightly.

Clearly Willard Grant Conspiracy evoke a wide range of views from both sincere fans and occasional listeners as the varied reviews of this and other works show. Therefore, any review can only be very personal. So- therefore, I will state my view and say I absolutely adore this album and consider it the peak of this bands career. Huge sweeping hymnals, choirs, strings, orchestras..... full on country ballads meet a heavenly orchestra on the edge of the abyss. Think Nick Cave meets Johnny Cash as they hitch a ride with the four horsemen.
Superb.

This album seems to have divided fans of Willard Grant Conspiracy .Some view it as a somnambulant masterpiece while others hear only dank morose dirges. I am definitely more with the former than the latter though I would,nt go as far as regarding Pilgrim Road as a masterpiece.
It is a work of occasionally stunning intensity with a handful of songs as good as any thing the band have done. The songs are downbeat and often elegiac and are often augmented by sepulchral strings with occasional brass , harp and even a choir billed as the "Pilgrim choir". This is interwoven with the bands usual array of guitars, organ and of course the chunky vocals of Robert Fisher. Piano also dominates on one or two tracks.
The songs are meditations on death, redemption, love , hope faith ..the usual stuff. As well as the originals there are two covers -a truly stunning interpretation of American Music Clubs "Miracle On 8th Street" which for me actually supersedes the original which is saying something . The mournful trumpet is truly extraordinary .There is also a cover of Lal Watterson's "Phoebe" with plump piano and wheezing pump organ .
Of the originals opener "Lost Hours" is a distraught ballad leading into "The Great Deceiver" one of the albums highlights with Fisher sharing a gospel duet with Iona MacDonald over skeletal guitar, lonesome brass and with the choir easing into the last third before a truly lovely coda. "Painter Blue " is ushered in with twinkling harp , crystal piano notes and bursts of brass hidden deep in the mix until drawn forward by chopping strings. On "The Pugilist" the piano is almost jaunty ....almost . The choir impart mood with some sombre harmonies while percussion is almost militaristic.

Contrary to some of the reviews here, this is a wonderfully arranged collection of music, but if you are looking for something upbeat look elsewhere.

Good music traditionally from WGC. Nothing new but solid. If you love WGC you cannot miss it
