Book Description

With chapter themes of Pilgrim, Camino, Companion, The West, Looking Back and Postscript, David Whyt'e 7th collection of poems explore the great questions of human life through the eyes of the pilgrim: someone passing through relatively quickly, someone for whom the destination changes step by step as the end of the path approaches, someone looking for the biggest context they can find or imagine, someone dependent on friendship, hospitality and help from friends and strangers alike.

Since buying the book, I have heard David speak about several of these poems putting them in context and delving deep into the words; they come even more strongly into life.

5.0 out of 5 stars His words are royal 7 Nov. 2012

David Whyte draws expression from words the way Arthur drew the sword from the stone. I highly recommend this and other poetry by Whyte. For a more deeply introspective approach to work, your mate and the self try the Three Marriages by Whyte. You will not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, existence 27 Jan. 2013

Straight and yet soft language. Universal yet personal. Existential and touches everyday life in thoughts and feeling. It's about being. Here on earth. I just love the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reflection of the road ahead toward sunset 1 Mar. 2013
By Mythic Highland - Published on
I've been reading and listening to David Whyte for more than a decade, and the poems in this collection, particularly his poems about pilgrimage, are his most heartfelt and honest yet. Whyte, as he showed recently during hours of sharing stories about his life and his poetry at the La Jolla Yoga Center, touches hearts and souls in poems like "Camino," "Refuge," and my favorite right now, "Santiago." His audio recordings are a great way to soothe the mind at bedtime. I could feel the water rising in my eyes as the pilgrim journeyed from Santiago to the sea, abandoned her shoes, and walked across the waves, disappearing beyond the far horizon, and appearing again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eye Opener 7 Oct. 2013

I was lamenting to my sister one day that I missed the writers, essayists and poets of our youth. She told me of David and sent a video of him reciting an excerpt of his "Opening of Eyes." It certainly opened my eyes.
Pilgrim is the first work of David's I've purchased. I enjoyed it and felt an ancient kindred with the spirit of his work. I'd like to thank David for the beauty and promise he has revealed to me and highly recommend this collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Gift of Poetry and Poets 8 July 2013
By Tanda Ainsworth - Published on

David Whyte's poetry is a must-read for me. I was excited to hear he had a new book out along with an accompanying CD. Hearing his read his poems, and talk about he story behind their writing is a wonderful experience. My husband, who never liked poetry, until he heard David Whyte speak said that if every high school had a poet like David Whyte talk about poetry that everyone would love poetry. I concur.
