Great book wow exercises tough to do correct,great to read the insight of great man..however main changes is exercise now are done from neutral spine. Pilates had a great mind and ability to put his ideas into action and apply great creativity..enjoy

This is extremely interesting and, in places, it's quite amusing. The pictures are very good. An essential read for anybody with a keen interest in Pilates and where it originated from.

This is like a history book about Mr Pilates and his exercising philosophy. Contains original exercises only, so not suitable for everybody. If you are not a Pilates Instructor this book won't give you a good explanation of the exercises - I would suggest you get something else to learn the moves.

This book comprises Joseph Pilates' two written works in one book. The first part consists of around 18 pages where Pilates describes what contrology is and why we should pursue physical perfection. Then in the main part of the book there are around 70 pages covering exercises which Pilates says should be done 4 times a week for 3 months to get the full benefits of his regime. Each exercise features one page with photos of Pilates doing each exercise with a description of how to do the exercise on the facing page. This is where the book fails to meet expectations. The photos are blurry and grainy in black and white and just strike me as low quality. More significantly the description of how to do each exercise would not be recommended as best practise by most physio specialists today. For example, most exercises tell you to lock your knees which is not recommended now as it puts pressure on your lower spine. This type of book may well be a useful reference for a Pilates teacher looking to develop their background knowledge on the subject/founder and anyone curious about Joseph Pilates' works. However, I would not recommend it for people wanting a book they can use as a stand alone reference to learn Pilates. The remainder of the book is Pilates' second publication which is around 16 pages long and focuses on lifestyle. Overall, not useful for beginners who want a thorough, accessible guide to doing Pilates.

Interesting and helpful in my training to be a Pilates instructor. But I would also recommend it to anyone who wants to get the most out of Pilates.
