Pilates mats should be thicker than the thin mats - more suited to Yoga - that are usually found in classes and shops; Yoga Mad suggests that a Pilates mat should be 10mm to 15mm thick. I suspect most of us travel to classes, so weight and portability are also an issue.
This mat is 10mm thick, smooth on the underside and ribbed on the side that you lie on. Rolled up, it is 17cm (nearly 7 inches) in diameter and held in place by two webbing straps with velcro fastenings that are linked by a webbing strap that acts as carrying strap, or shoulder strap. Despite the thick construction, it is lighter than the thinner mat that my wife uses, so it is easy to take to classes.
The mat is comfortable even when kneeling on knobbly knees - I have Osgood Schlatters on one knee - without being too soft. The ribbed surface gives good grip for Pilates without being sticky. In Body Balance I have a small towel to wipe off any sweat, as I've come close to amusing the rest of the class by an improptu sideways splits when I've stood on sweat in a wide stance along the length of the mat. It doesn't elongate when doing spine curls in Pilates. Standing balance exercises are best done off the mat as the thickness doesn't provide a firm footing.
For Pilates, this mat is a much nicer experience than using the thin mats at the leisure centre and gym that I attend. A grippy Yoga mat is probably better for the Tai Chi and Yoga elements in Body Balance. I've used it in Yoga after a knee arthroscopy as the thick foam is kinder on the knees; however, wide stance asanas such as Warrior II and Triangle can cause to mat to creep slightly so more care is needed. It's great for relaxation in Yoga Nidra.
As expected with a rolled mat, the ends can curl up slightly when unrolled on the floor, but this isn't a problem if the mat is rolled with the base outwards after a class, and then with the other face outwards after the next class. The carrying strap is a bit short to use as a shoulder strap, but I use a longer strap between the two webbing straps for carrying it when I cycle. The diameter of the rolled up mat - much like a camping bed roll - may make it difficult to find a suitable bag, but the smooth wipe down underside means that it can usually be stored and carried without a bag.
This mat made the Pilates class more enjoyable and, was a good price given the thickness. It can also be used for most Yoga asanas.
