I went to see a physiotherapist for 6 months for painful sciatica, lower back, pelvis and leg pain after a tough pregnancy. She prescribed a physiotherapy course based on Pilates and when I was done she suggested I try other Pilates videos or classes to continue my recovery. They nearly killed me! Until I found this DVD.
The other Pilates I tried was trying too hard to be, well, 'hard' -- to appeal to superfit people. This tape is back to basics, nothing fancy, exercises that simply work.
They are the exact exercises my physiotherapist prescribed plus a few more I trust implicitly because the focus is on safety, precision, core strength and results... not fancy locations, uber sexy actresses, and pretty leotards (though the scenery is nice, the instructor pleasing, just not over powering).
I am quite simply better off. The sciatica pain is easing off -- and I don't have to pay out a lot more money to go back to the physio. I'm sticking with this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pilates for Back and Posture 31 Dec 2007
What can I say! Similar to other reviewers I too had been paying out alot of money to chiropractors and the like. So, based on the other reviewers' rave reviews I thought I'd give this a go. It's so low key that much of the time you don't feel like you're doing much at all - but clearly something happens deep within! After months of persistant lower back pain I know I can do the 30 minute (totally unstrenuous) routine and get instant and lasting relief. If only I had time to do it say 2-3 times a week I think my back pain days would be firmly behind me. Can't recommend it more strongly - give it a go!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pilates for Back and Posture 18 Oct 2006
I have a collpased lower disc which has caused chronic lower back pain and severe nerve pain in the groin for the last 9 months. I have tried physio, injections in the spine, swimming and reflexology, though all have been very painful, expensive and have not cured my condition. I have been using this DVD daily for the last 8 weeks and this has vastly improved my condition. Initially, I found it hard to perform the breathing techniques but once these are mastered, the exercises are easy. I have now memorised the DVD and therefore I am able to perform the exercises without the DVD in approximately 25 minutes, anywhere in the house.

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be difficult for beginners 14 Aug 2006
In my opinion Ms Lloyd-Barker describes the technique in a way that would be difficult for a beginner to practise. For instance, in several places in the DVD she instructs the viewer to engage the TA (transverse abdominals) at about 30%. If you haven't previously had any personal instruction, it would be very difficult to judge what is or isn't 30%. I have had lessons in the past from reputable teachers and they have never spoken in terms of percentages when instructing pupils to engage this group of muscles. Having said that, I did get relief from a persistent nagging backache at night after one session.

Like others leaving quite negative feedback, this DVD was truly RUBBISH.

Full of flowery talk and not enough clinical exercise. I would have benefited more from purchasing a book (which would also have been cheaper) and then just checking out youtube for physical assurance. I think it is generally difficult to follow pilates from a dvd especially if you are a beginner. Thus adding more emphasis to the fact that this dvd is a waste of time and .

When you finally get through all the talk, you are only literally given a minute to do what Ms. Llyod-Barker calls "5-10 sets," therefore resulting in you having to quickly pause the dvd to carry on your sets. THIS IS NOT A WORK ALONG DVD, JUST AN INTRO FOR YOU TO THEN ATTEMPT YOURSELF IN YOUR OWN TIME. Needless to say, completely defeating the point of purchasing a do-it-yourself dvd!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars poor pilates 9 Feb 2009
I was very disappointed with this dvd. It seems to take a long time for the intro to start, which is not needed. The presenters voice is a bit monotonous after a while. The exercises are explained in detail but too much, had to fast forward a lot of these. Wouldn't reccommend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chiropracter amazed by my results. 28 July 2012
By Betsy
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
My problems before using this dvd -
*pain and stiffness, restricted flexibility and range of motion in neck, lower back and right arm.
*right side of torso felt compressed for about last 10 months, (something refusing to be clicked into place).
*attending chiropracter regularly for over 5 years as constantly needing things clicked into place.
*a slight fall a few days before using dvd for 1st time resulted in increased lower back pain and a very sore tightening from shoulder blade to shoulder blade, which felt like it was knotted in the middle and then ran down my spine.

My benifits from using dvd for 1st time -
*improved flexibility and range of motion during exercising for first time.
*30 mins after finishing noticed all tightness and paint caused by my fall had gone.
*improved sleep, was deeper and more rested feeling next morning.
*visited chiropracter on day two and she noticed improvement to my posture as soon as I walked in room. During my deep massage she commented on my spine being straighter. She was amazed by my results after only one lot of exercises. She managed to get my righthand side torso to click in to place after 10 months of trying. I believe that is because by torso was extended by exercises. CHIROPRACTER WANTS DVD.
*improved breathing - not out of breath as quick as before.
* feel taller and that my torso feels elongated.
