Book Description

5 May 2010
Small-scale pig keeping is expanding, not only in the countryside but also in urban areas. However, at the outset the prospect of owning pigs can be frightening for the uninitiated. "Pigs for the Freezer" is aimed at the small-scale producer in a suburban or urban environment as well as smallholders who want to keep a few pigs for the first time. It guides the reader through the day-to-day routine of looking after pigs and provides essential information. Moreover, it touches on the emotional side of sending your pigs to slaughter and demonstrates how the carcasses should be butchered. Finally, the author provides a selection of delicious recipes using just about every part of the pig, including the ears.

More About the Author

Pigs and smallholding have been my passion for the past 12 years. I started off by breeding Gloucester Old Spots, but then moved onto Oxford Sandy and Blacks, Large Blacks and Tamworths. Along with my husband I ran the Bidgiemire Pig Co for 9 years before taking a back seat to concentrate on my fledgling journalistic career. I believe very strongly in urban pig keeping and many of our customers are people who have a large garden and live in a suburban area. I have appeared on tv and radio in connection with keeping pigs including Sky, BBC and ITV as well as appearing on programmes abroad. I now organise pig features for agricultural shows as well as speaking at relevent events including the very first Scottish Smallholder show. My articles can be found in Farmers Guardian, HomeFarmer, Smallholder Magazine, Practical Pigs as well as local and national newspapers. I have recently bought over from Holland the very first Meishan breed of pigs to be seen in the country for over 25 years. My intention is to breed and establish a british herd.

5.0 out of 5 stars An essential read 14 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
I don't intend to raise pigs for my own table at present but I do love pork products and I take care to buy only free range meat. I also admire pigs for their own sake and had read the author's previous work, Choosing and Keeping Pigs with the view of keeping them in the future. I found that book highly informative, practical and was impressed by the author's respect for the animal and for nature in general. Being of a farming background myself I have a keen interest in the journey of food from farm to fork and having read the previous book had high expectations for this one. I wasn't disappointed.
As in the previous book, the author provides ample information for the beginner and covers all aspects from choosing the right breed to butchering. It's a very timely book, more and more people are turning to the traditional ways of self sufficiency but it is essential to get it right, both from an animal welfare perspective and for human health also. I would strongly encourage anyone thinking of doing so to read this book.
