I was another enticed by the spooky cover and "the most terifying thriller you'll read this year" quip. And I must admit; I read the first third or so at the speed of light- loved it. There was action, drama, suspense, and certain parts were genuinely creepy. The main character, while some sort of northener, was fairly likeable and added some dry humour. The constant referral to himself of himself as "Oaksey" was annoying though- who actually refers to themself as their nickname?!
But then I hit the wall, in athletes terms. The story seemed to climax around about a third of the way through, leaving the rest of the story piecing all the rest together mainfully laboriously, with chapters donated by his 'add-nothing', 'annoy the reader because you're pointless and a moron' wife. Look love, we couldn't give a fish's nipple if you fancy your boss or not, lets get back to hunting Malachi can we?
After wading through chapters and chapters of nothing really happening other than a random act of raping molestation by Oaksey's wife on the girl they 'adopt', another "okay so what was the point of that" moments, we eventually got to the end. If I hadn't already been bored to tears with it, I would now be confused to tears also. The ending totally baffled me, and to this day I've not got a clue what actually happened. Bizarre. It seemed like Mo just thought, "well we need some sort of ending-twist...this'll make no sense but what the heck lets bung it in" effort. Rubbish.
The first third is well worth reading though, hence the 3 stars. Once you get there, as suggested by another reviewee, just toss it aside; it really isn't worth the effort to plough through and then get totally bemused by the ending, rendering the whole ploughing-through process as pointless.
