Charged quickly, bright white light and lasts well. I didn't read the specification propoerly before purchase and found out that, if left plugged into the mains, the light automatically comes on during power cut or (in my case) when RCD trips. This was an unexpected bonus, and it works a treat.

Three years later.... Still works every time I take it out of the box. The original intention was to use this lantern as a backup but it is the first light I reach for when I need a light source - DIY, boat, car etc. Yes, it is looking a bit tatty and knocked about but works as well as when I bought it, including keeping its charge well. Pricier now but I am going to but another to replace the Remote Control Camping Lantern I bought at the same time and was absolute rubbish.

Whereas most LED lanterns are used (and reviewed) as portable camping and caravan lighting, or as occasional dark place lighting, this Pifco Rechargeable 33-LED lamp is very much aimed at being a trickle charged standby light, for use when there is a mains failure.

It is for this latter use that I bought it and I think it is very good at this. I have it fixed to a wall, permanently plugged in to a mains socket to keep it trickle charged. It has keyhole slots for screw mountings, so it is detachable. Its design allows one to keep it powered on (it does not light up when it is powered) such that only if the mains fails does it light up.

One may select how many strips of LEDs are lit. There are 3 strips of 11 LEDs and so one may select 11, 22 or 33. Now, it can be charged up, unplugged and carried around like a lantern, and it does have a flip out prop-up stand at the back to allow it to be stood up, but I do not use it in that way. As a standby emergency light it is very convenient.

It is quite substantial, being about 12" long, 3½" wide and 3" deep, and has what feels like a fairly large battery inside (which is not replaceable as far as I can tell, but at this price that is not a problem as one could just buy a new lantern).

Excellent! 26 Feb 2010

I was primarily after a lighting solution for my grandparents so that in the event of a power cut they would'nt be left completely int he dark as mobility is now an issue for them.

I originally bought a version of the lamp which used two flourescent tubes however the battery died within a couple of months and in any event in a mains failiure it never activated.

This lamp is however fantastic. You can select how many of the leds you want on and it can be plugged into the wall so that when the mains fail it comes on, which it does. Being led's aswell the battery should last a fair bit and the light is very good. It has a small footprint so it is unobtrusive. My only two minor niggles would be the stand, which although sturdy I felt could've been a bit more solid and the power cable length. Plenty long enough to reach a point but I felt it could have been longer. These are two minor points which are very specific to me though and no doubt may not bother anyone else.

At any rate the price negates this and at £15 you can't fault it. Mine came via a third party seller (ryness electrical and lighting) who were great. Received the product quickly and very well packaged!

Very good lamp for a workspace or for emergency lighting, in fact very practicle for a variety of situations.
