The French social philosopher Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) is now recognised as one of the major thinkers of the twentieth century. In a career of over fifty years, Bourdieu studied a wide range of topics: education, culture, art, politics, economics, literature, law, and philosophy. To me, this is the best Bourdieu critical book. All key concepts are clearly marked out explained in the most simple but precise language.
This is especially so when compared to Jenkins book on Bourdieu. Jenkins' book is advertised as 'direct, concise and to the point'. Personal experience is that it is so confusing, both writing style and concept construction compared to Grenfell's.
As a third year phd student in culture study, I find this book has helped me emencely in conceptualising Bourdieu and highly recommend it to potential buyers.

I think it fair to say that most philosophers truly have their head in the clouds and their dictionary firmly under their arm ! Bordieu is no exception. His concepts however are within the grasp of the ordinary man and even more so when analysed and shared in this book by Grenfell and colleagues. Habitus, Field and Capital become readily understood and acceptable. Bordieun theory can be judged to be enlightened,and embraced by scholars of the social sciences who can apply it in studies of structures as well as the structured !
