Product Description

Review

"The book manages that extraordinary feat of offering both accessible introductions to Bourdieu's concepts that are good 'to think with' whilst also offering a depth of analysis that will engage scholars already familiar with Bourdieu's work. Whether a chapter says something new about familiar concepts like habitus, field, or capital, or it introduces less discussed concepts like conatus, the writing stretches the reader's understanding of what sociological theory can be." --Arthur Frank, University of Calgary

Product Description

The French social philosopher Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) is now recognised as one of the major thinkers of the twentieth century. In a career of over fifty years, Bourdieu studied a wide range of topics: education, culture, art, politics, economics, literature, law, and philosophy. Throughout his studies, Bourdieu developed a highly specialised series of concepts that he referred to as his "thinking tools", which were used to uncover the workings of contemporary society. Pierre Bourdieu: Key Concepts takes a selection of his most important concepts and examines them in detail. Focusing on an individual concept, each chapter is written to be of immediate use to the student with little or no previous knowledge of Bourdieu. At the same time, the chapters develop various dimensions around each concept to make the coverage of interest to the more experienced reader.

To me, this is the best Bourdieu critical book. All key concepts are clearly marked out explained in the most simple but precise language.

This is especially so when compared to Jenkins book on Bourdieu. Jenkins' book is advertised as 'direct, concise and to the point'. Personal experience is that it is so confusing, both writing style and concept construction compared to Grenfell's.

As a third year phd student in culture study, I find this book has helped me emencely in conceptualising Bourdieu and highly recommend it to potential buyers.

Key Concepts Rocks ! 18 Jun 2011
By Lois
Format:Paperback
I think it fair to say that most philosophers truly have their head in the clouds and their dictionary firmly under their arm ! Bordieu is no exception. His concepts however are within the grasp of the ordinary man and even more so when analysed and shared in this book by Grenfell and colleagues. Habitus, Field and Capital become readily understood and acceptable. Bordieun theory can be judged to be enlightened, and embraced by scholars of the social sciences who can apply it in studies of structures as well as the structured !
