Biography

Few bands can be credited with creating a legacy, however, legendary New York based extreme metal outfit SUFFOCATION have done just that. For 20 years now SUFFOCATION have been creating music that has become the very standard by which we judge all things extreme.

Their fusion of technicality, groove and sheer unrelenting brutality has been imitated but never quite duplicated. Milestone ... Read more in Amazon's Suffocation Store

This is my personal favourite Suffocation album by a goat's tail and I am sure that most fans would agree with me too. There are just so many classic Suffocation songs all on one disk here and the production is also alot better than their previous releases. From the moment I first put this cd on and heard the opening title track I was very impressed and was very happy I had made my purchase with that track alone. The rest of the album is also just as good and I think the remake of Breeding the Spawn is better than the original. Synthetically Revived is one of my favourites and was also re-done but I still prefer the original version better on the Human Waste EP. If you like Brutal Death Metal and don't own this album then you are missing out big time! This album definately deserves 5 stars and will always be one of my favourite Death Metal albums. No one does it better than this band because they are the originals of this sub genre of Metal. Hail Suffocation your music is intense!!

Pierced from Within is an album released in 1995 by the technical death metal band Suffocation. "Synthetically Revived" is a re-recording of the song of the same name from the Human Waste EP and "Breeding the Spawn" is a re-recording of the title track from the band's previous album. Both this album and Effigy of the Forgotten have been re-released by Roadrunner Records as part of the "Two from the Vault" series. Before 2013's Pinnacle of Bedlam, Pierced from Within was the only full-length album by Suffocation not to feature Mike Smith as a drummer.

Pierced from Within is, in my opinion, another excellent album from Suffocation. I would consider this album to be one of my favourites along with Effigy of the Forgotten and Breeding the Spawn, and of course their Human Waste EP (the Despise the Sun EP and their later albums are very good as well, and ones I also recommend). Like with their first two albums, I like absolutely every track on Pierced from Within, especially the title track, "Thrones of Blood", "Depths of Depravity" with that bass guitar intro leading to Frank Mullen's low guttural vocals with great guitar and drum work, "Suspended in Tribulation" and "Torn into Enthrallment". As stated earlier, there are re-recordings of "Synthetically Revived" which I think is just as good as the original version from the Human Waste EP, and "Breeding the Spawn" (the latter is good as well but I feel the original recording of that song from the album of the same name is better). I very highly recommend Pierced from Within as it's such a fantastic album by such a great death metal band.

This is my favorite album from Suffocation. Along with demo in 98, which sounds even harder, but less distinguishable. Pierced from Within (1995) is hard and distinguishable. Now it represents classic album of Americal death metal(technical and brutal type). I personally learned some songs to play on guitar some decade ago, when I was in a metal band. Really hard to play and properly constructed.

The same could be said about the structure of songs. Complex and complicated. Still remember Suffocation mania from late 90's. The best band in their own kind. Of course there were other similarly good (for example Cannibal corpse, Immolation, Sinister, Dying fetus, Death, Napalm death, and many others ), but Suffocation was somehow seen as the one with the earliest succesful attempts to play hard, complicated, technical and still recognizable sound. Straight first 30 seconds will let you know, that the material is heavy and deep.

I also remember liking the solos the best from all death metal bands. Very distictive and fast. And as I walked around in the metal circles, I hear that many others consider exactly this band to be the break-through one (when it comes to style within death metal).

I bought this album inspired by the strenght of the reviews which it recieved. All of what I read was true, this is (relatively) highly complex music played with high class musicianship. The vocals, guitar bass and drums cannot be faulted. However, there is one problem which I found with this band which may or may not be peculiar to me. While some of the
songs are very fast and intense, they are only so for short periods (e.g.tracks 3 and 9) after which, the music lapses into chugging 'grindcore' for an interlude only then the regain the energy, by which time the listener has lost the 'groove'. Don't get me wrong, the songwriting is superb throughout but I can't help feeling that sometimes the ideas on this album are too concentrated and some of the finer points deserve to be elaborated on. It seems like an unusual complaint, but it could be said that there is too much good material compacted into this album! I would have preferred a little more depravity in the lyrics but this is quite an old album now and people were more innocent then and easily shocked. The music sounds very fresh however after ten years and is highly recommended.
