Svenson's runic practice is firmly rooted in understanding the Norse literary texts and respecting the deities they depict.

Book Description

Pierced by the Light was written from the heart and with feeling to express one individual's point of view on how the Norse Archetype can be perceived as a personal guide to life and living. I make no claim to be a leading authority on the subject but I have endeavored to advance some new material as well as some older familiar themes which should appeal to all those of you who are seeking their soul identity by walking in the steps of their ancestors a way of life we call today the Northern Tradition. There is a huge selection of New Age books on the market about the runes today, filled with at best conjecture or even the author's personal esoteric belief system. Others put out a mix and match reconstruction of different magical disciplines, which are a far cry from the actual usage and actual purpose or reasoning why these ancient archetypal symbols came into being. Many have had to rely on re-hashed rune works, which are inaccurate to say the least! Very little is actually known about the true origins of runes. So much work is still needed on expanding their kernel rune forms and values to the times when runes were still a living tradition.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done!, 22 Sep 2006
This review is from: Pierced by the Light: Viking Gods, Runes and 21st Century Magic (Paperback)
In his book, Pierced by the Light: Viking Gods, Runes, and 21st Century Teutonic Magic, author Rig Svenson shares with us his personal journey with the runes, magic and the Northern Path. It is not an simple read for new-agers or beginners, nor one to be easily digested in one sitting. Rather, it is an information-dense read that covers Norse Mythology, the history of the runes, it offers a deep and scholarly chapter on rune phoenetics, and has several fascinating chapters on different aspects of rune and northern magic and even runic divination.

Rig has my deepest respect as a runic scholar of the highest caliber and I genuinely anticipate the publication of his next book!

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Pierced by the Light: Viking Gods, Runes and 21st Century Magic (Paperback)
This is one of the first books to make a stand against the pervasive commercialisation and adulteration of the Northern esoteric traditions.

There are a multitude of books out there on runes and related subjects that pander to the New-Age Industry's need to create easy and attractive packages that will sell in the "crystal dolphin" shops. There are other books that pervert the traditions for racist or political ideals. There are even a few that use a fairly academic approach to bolster their own ambitions to create personality cults.

Svenson cuts through the bunk and points the way to a reformation, with a sane approach to the Northern esoteric. Written from personal experience, and backed up by good research, this is an essential document for anyone interested in finding the truth in a genre that has been hijacked by those who invent "tradition" to suit their own purposes.

There is now a growing number of reformers, thanks to this book and a handful like it. Buy it and help reclaim your heritage from those who have exploited it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Runic Review, 17 Nov 2006
By
This review is from: Pierced by the Light: Viking Gods, Runes and 21st Century Magic (Paperback)
Rig Svenson's book Pierced by the Light (2003) is a remarkable examination of the Northern Traditions. In this book Svenson re-examines primary sources to produce an unadulterated approach to the Northern tradition free from New Age adulterations, and his rigorously researched approach is unusual in the present climate of shopping basket spirituality.

But this text is far more than a repudiation of the New Age nimiety per se; rather it seeks to reclaim ancient traditions such as the importance of rune vocalisation whilst debunking modern myths such as the `blank rune'. Furthermore, Svenson offers the reader a method of rune reading that is an antithesis to the more mainstream `quick fix' form, and produces markedly better results. However, Svenson is not solely concerned with the runes, and this book explores both the magical and theological aspects of the Teutonic tradition, with fascinating sections on Odin and Freyja.

To his credit, Svenson's strongly discredits those who have attempted to pervert the Northern tradition by falsely associating it with misogynistic and racist ideologies. With all the above in mind I would argue Svenson has produced an inspirational book which leads one to reassess one's practise and should find a place on every Heathen's bookshelf.
