Book Description

1 Sep 2011

Everyone loves a pie. Pies are part of our food culture and heritage, as British as ... pork pie. Pieminister - the creation of Tristan Hogg and Jon Simon - have led the way in reinventing this great British classic for a new generation of food lovers. With their brilliantly creative and delicious recipes making the likes of their Heidi Pie, Pietanic and Moo Pie into household names, pieminister have brought free-range, luscious and locally sourced baking to the country's top delis, food halls and high streets.

Pieminister pies are more than a comforting plate-full for the winter months. Throughout the year Tristan and Jon search out the best fresh, natural ingredients, creating an ever-changing, wonderfully varied menu. And in pieminister - a pie for all seasons you will find recipes that are filled with seasonal ingredients, great for spring suppers, summer parties and autumn lunches. Small pies, big pies, breakfast pies, fruit pies, family pies and pies that make you go oooooh!

Recipes include:

pork, chorizo and prawn pie

asparagus, pea and ricotta pie

chili con carne pie

smoked haddock and cider pie

smoked aubergine and olive strudel

pulled pork, sage and apple pie

pheasant and Bath chaps pie

paneer, spinach and pea pie

rhubarb and custard pie

chocolate 'hedonist' pie

Fantastic ingredients and the best pastry you've ever tasted. Into the oven, be patient and then enjoy. Live and eat pie!

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely book to match lovely pies! 14 Sep 2011

I love Pie Minister pies, I love the ethos of the brand and I love this book!

The book itself is a sturdy hardback with good quality pages. Every recipe has an illustration, a definite bonus - I hate recipe books without pictures.

There is great advice on making pastry, which will make this a great reference book for many recipes. The book is split into the seasons, to help you cook with good seasonal ingredients. It goes beyond just meat pies, there are sweet pies, fish pies, vegetarian pies. There is also a section on good drinks to match your pies and recipes for accompaniments.

In summary, I heartily recommend this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!! Worth it for the pastry recipes alone! 16 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
I tend to steer clear of recipe books with a single genre pies, macarons, bread etc) as I often found that, only one or two recipes appeal to me. This is NOT the case with Pieminister. I mainly went for it because I'm a fan of the moo pie and was hoping to get the recipe (it's not here, in case you're wondering, however an adaptation is). Spurred on by the many positive reviews I broke my rule and went for it. How glad am I! The book begins with recipes for short, rough puff, suet, sour cream and sweet pastry - even giving suggestions for using the scraps, in a real 'waste-not-want-not' air. They (very sensibly) admit that puff and filo should be left to the professionals. The book is then subdivided into pie recipes using seasonal ingredients (savoury and sweet) and ends with accompaniments recipes for both. I was inspired by the ernest writing and anecdotes. There are many recipes I cannot wait to try. The instruction is clear enough to be informative, yet laid-back enough to allow you to make your own adjustments. I jumped up and made the rough puff, for the first time, as soon I put the book down: please note that I have struggled normally with even easy shortcrust pastry. They say a picture is worth a thousand words so I've uploaded a picture. I will tell you, it tasted even better!

5.0 out of 5 stars A triumph! 6 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
I'm a dedicated Pieminister fan, but I'm a bit of a reluctant cook. I get all enthusiastic about beautiful recipe books, I dive in and admire the layout, oogle the photography, study the ingredients and then... I usually leave it at that. I loved the seasonal story of a year of pies, the mouth-watering pictures and nice anecdotes, but it's got bags of substance too. It's packed with really different and tasty-sounding takes on the humble pie. I've only had it since the weekend and - hold the front page - I've already cooked one of the recipes - Romany's Lucky Ducky pie. It was "a triumph, darling!" as we like to say in our family. Really looking forward to tucking into some more soon...

I was looking forward to this book, but was disappointed. The very basics are ignored in the search for novelty. Nowhere near as good as Tom Bridge's Pie Society book. Read more
