Product Description

American roots often take hold where you least expect them. "Mars", the opening cut off of Lori McKenna's new album, Pieces of Me (Catalyst Disc/Signature Sounds), finds her celebrating everything from the mundane (the hole wearing through the fabric of her couch) to the fantastic, as she ponders the reflection of Mars in her son's eyes and listens to him promise that "I'm gonna get there someday." It's the kind of moment captured that songwriters, filmmakers, and storytellers can only hope to stumble upon, but for McKenna, it's just one of the many striking images torn directly from the rich fabric of her daily life - images that mark the arrival of a powerful new American voice.

This is an album full of touching and warm-hearted songs. It has a slightly scuffed, worn sound, there's a bit of country in there, a lot of emotion and reflection and straight good songwriting, a lot of nice guitar. I'm making 'Pieces of Me' sound soppy, which it isn't. I bought the album years ago after hearing 'Deserving Song' on the radio somewhere and have recently rediscovered it. There's something direct, articulate and affecting about the way Lori McKenna writes lyrics, writing about experiences we all know well, it's not political or glamourous or experimental or edgy but 'Pieces of Me' is one of my favourite cds at the moment because it is emotionally intelligent, genuine good music and a bit like a warm blanket.

When I first bought this cd I was also listening to Holly Figueroa and Tracy Chapman (though neither of these two have the country-ness of Lori McKenna) - just in case that helps you work out whether you would like 'Pieces of Me'.

A few sound bites on a TV show and I had to find out who she was and get some of the music. This is the last album I needed and I must say for early in her career it has some great songs. If you've not found her then you should I can't think of a poor album she's made.

Exceptional Record 25 Mar. 2002
By Amazon Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I heard of Lori on a NPR Morning Edition segment profiling unknown but exceptional performers. It took me a while to find a copy of the CD, but the wait was well worth it. Her lyrics are very moving, and she has interesting thoughts and stories to share. Pink Sweater stands out on this album, as a song about the dragging death of a southern black man several years ago. Other songs are more contemplative. Have listened to it numerous times on my daily commute, and I keep discovering new things in the CD that I enjoy.

Wow! 13 Nov. 2001

Lori McKenna is one of the best singer songwriters in the buisness. This CD is a far step from the debut CD, which is saying something, seeing as how the debut was amazing. Can't wait for the third album!
Keep up the great work Lori!

Not bowled over by this one 18 Jan. 2008

I purchased this album after after being blown away by Bittertown. I thought, "fantastic, another Patty Griffin (of sorts)". Unfortunately, I found Pieces of Me to be very average and I've listened to it several times. I'm not sure what the other reviewers see in this one.

Love Her!!! 3 Dec. 2002
By Bob Becker - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Listen guys,
This woman to me is very very good. And only two cd's out??
Where are all the music lovers out there? I don't know if she is even out in alot of cd stores. I love her!! Maybe sort of an Alanis M but laid back and folkish. I would recommend BOTH of her
cd's. Actually maybe a better voice than Alanis. Sit back and relax and listen if you like good folk music. She may be my favorite female artist in the singer-songwwiter,folk-rock,indie music, and I have a good varied collection of them.

Love Lori!! 5 Aug. 2003
By Brandon - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Lori McKenna has quickly become my favorite artist in the singer-songwriter category. All of her songs are simple and honest but never boring. Her voice will grab you and keep you wanting more. There is obvious talent when someone can sing without over production and tons of background music. My favorites from this album are 'Fireflies', 'Mars', 'Deserving Song', and 'You are Loved'. 'Never Die Young' is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard!! Richard Shindell adds vocals to this song that Lori wrote about her mother that died when she was 6 years old.
