Product Description

Product Description

Using clay in a contemporary manner for wall space is an increasingly fashionable and innovative solution both for decorators and makers. Wall pieces are the perfect solution for those who enjoy sculpture but have no space; they fulfill the same function as a picture while being much more dynamic and 3D. Current wall pieces vary enormously from simple tiled pieces to huge installations, and this book looks at all the problems, solutions and diverse approaches to designing, making and hanging wall pieces. The book is filled with illustrations of fantastic pieces of finished work by a variety of international makers. It gives an insight into the methods of contemporary makers, showing how to plan, design, make, mount and safely hang their own ceramic pieces. This guide aims to provide both inspirational images with a practical approach.

Wall to wall 19 Jan 2010
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
The wall ornaments in this book are probably not quite what you are thinking of, large pieces, the majority would be unsuitable for the average home. There is a superb piece designed for a kitchen by Victoria Ellis and some smaller raku pieces by Emma Johnstone, but by and large, the book deals with inspiring, large-scale, installation pieces. They do, however, give an insight to what is possible in the world of ceramics. Anne Mercedes has written the first chapter.

"Wall Pieces" by Dominique Bivar Segurado is one of the volumes in the excellent Ceramics Handbook series. I have read other books in the series and they have all been comprehensive and excellent introductions to their respective areas of interest. Given my heightened expectations, Wall Pieces turned out to be a slight disappointment. Though it covered the subject well, it did so with less depth than I would have liked. Admittedly this is a wide-ranging subject and, like most books in the Ceramics Handbook series, it is rather thin, so I'm willing to cut the author some slack. Perhaps it is just that I was more interested in the nuts and bolts of what I need to worry about when creating a ceramic mural and less on the history of such things or wordy descriptions of different artists' efforts. Nevertheless I heartily recommend this book as a good introduction to the subject.

Most informative. 13 May 2011

I think the one and only review for this book is a bit unfair. Sure there could have been more relevant photos, but this is a small handbook after all. Personally I found the photographs informative. The general information very helpfull and as I personally was interested in mounting and hanging such artworks it seems to cover that aspect perfectly. For me it was worth the purchase. MB

Wall Pieces [ ceramics handbook 22 Sep 2010
By duck - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
The illustrations of wall pieces in this book were some of the weakest I have ever seen published. Only two or three had any substance the rest looked like they were shot out of a shot gun against the wall. I don't recommend spending the money on this book, surely there are better ones out there.
