Dinner (TV) Is Served! 24 Dec 2010
A Kid's Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
In this first episode of the penultimate end of series set, 'Devils on Horseback: Part 1' begins by Margaret (the always lovely Maggie Steed) forcing Henry (the always intense Griffiths) to a day at the races. But, as all things must in Henry's world, a young stable lad is found dead there and his boss, Chief Constable Freddy Fisher (Malcolm Sinclair); also a guest there, suddenly turns to Henry to 'sort it out.'

Along with his Doctor Watson, in the form of trusty DS Cambridge (Bella Enahoro - although her long, straight, dyed hair doesn't look right, it has to be said!), they get to work - whilst Margaret looks over the books of one of the owners of the horse that the dead stable boy looked after. The episode culminates in another brutal murder.

'Devils on Horseback: Part 2' picks up with that murder of another stable lad, before a very unexpected prime suspect is apprehended for his murder. As the remainder of the tale is lazily played out, for we know the real killer of these two isn't who they have in custody, Margaret plays the detective herself - and nearly pays the price for it too!

In the third episode, 'Chinese Whispers,' a local Chinese takeaway seems to be under threat from yobs at night re: fire bombs and such. Henry, whilst picking up an order there one night - lemon chicken, so it must be good! - speaks to May, the daughter of the owner; but he doesn't want Henry's help as much as she does.

It turns out that widowed Mr. Chen is a gambler deeply in debt to a restaurateur in London's Chinatown who has been has been threatening him for the money he owes.

The subplot to this episode is that Pie In The Sky gets entered into the Great British Grub Contest 1996, and after making their way to the Finals, find themselves, of course, winning in style - albeit, as Margaret finds out too late, due to more than just the quality of the food.

In 'New Leaf,' a (nasty) blast from the past comes back to haunt Henderson (Nick Raggett), and Fisher allocates Henry to guard Sasha Wilkes, a wife who is due to testify against her gangster husband. Called to a country safe house, Sasha is a real bitch to all around her - including Henry, until some of his fine cooking begins to mellow her!

And, as it turns out, Henderson's visitor, a rogue DCI (Harding), and Sasha are all linked here, but one of the more interesting facts revealed is Henderson's real first name! Who knew?!

In 'Breaking Bread,' to save money Fisher turns over the police catering to a mass production company, The Happy Ploughman. As seems to always be the case, The Happy Ploughman are also clients of Margaret's book keeping, so she gets involved when a business function between the Met and The Happy Ploughman comes under siege.

The story gets a very nice twist two-thirds of the way through, but then decides to run away with it completely! That said, one of the suspects, a local baker herself, Flora McKee is rather lovely to look at throughout the entire episode!

In the final episode, 'Gary's Cake,' well, to say this one starts out like a scene from the Keystone Cops is an understatement! Armed robbers in crash helmets target the Pie In The Sky one night, and a rich customer's jewellery is stolen. Nicola (the deeply-tanned, and beautiful Samantha Janus) has a new boyfriend, Paul, who all believe to be a bit dodgy, and Gary still has his love for her at boiling point!

An up-his-own-ass DS Slater investigates the crime, doing his best to find the truth, sure, but at the same time alienating everyone with his insistence that it was an inside job re: the fact that both Gary and Henderson have prior criminal records.

The story drags a little as they knock on a few doors, but the ending is well played out. Gary finally seems to be getting somewhere with Nicola, after she dumps Paul for being married, but looks can be deceptive - for, SPOILER ALERT! come the last season, season 5, she is no longer a member of the cast!

And, at the end of this episode, the end of season 4, Fisher informs Henry of a change he needs to make to his life - a change that shocks both he and Margaret but that is not revealed to us! But, SPOILER ALERT! what that change is, come season five, is Henry is appointed as the head of the Public Duties Squad, which essentially sells its services to the private sector! And, instead of the trusty D.S. Cambridge, he has two new staff members, WPC Jane Morton and PC Ed Guthrie as back-up!

FYI: The building in Hemel Hempstead, UK that was used as Henry Crabbe's restaurant was a florist at the time of filming, but has now become a restaurant named 'Pie in the Sky' in real life! [RT]

MORE Crime investigation from a restaurant chef 9 Dec 2010
By Harold Wolf - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
More crooks than cooking in series 4. More intrigue. Restaurant relationships rather than recipes. Ep.3 has the chef's signature Steak & Kidney Pie (but alas, no recipe yet). If you've not seen the earlier Pie in the Sky series, by all means go back and begin with set 1. Then, like me, you may have to buy them one after another. Really fun, family friendly, crime mystery with a chef twist which makes for some interesting writing.

TO CATCH UP: Richard Griffiths is superb in the role of a copper wanting retirement, who also is a fine chef. Wife Margaret (Maggie Steed-"Clatterford") takes care of the restaurant books and legal end and adds comedy/romance. ACC Fisher (Malcolm Sinclair-'The Young Victoria') makes sure Crabbe has crimes to solve with the help of DC Sophia (Bella Enahoro). Beautiful waitress Nicola (Samantha Womack-"EastEnders"),good-looking dish, has expanded or at least displays more chest. Asst Chef Gary (Nicholas Lamont) is featured in ep.6 wants Nicola. Henderson (Nick Raggett-"The Sins""Holby City") is veg grower, and kit-help, featured in ep.4. Guest stars too!

OVERALL, the series began as a potential one-plot show (retired cop turns chef) to a long TV crime series with very good multi-plot episodes. Always a crime, suspense, intrigue, always relationships, romance, always comedy, always food. Never a recipe.
Always SUBTITLES. Episodes about 50 min each. The original building, flower shop in Hemel Hempstead, England, became a REAL "Pie in the Sky" restaurant since the show began. I don't know if they offer steak/kidney pie or recipes.

EPISODE details for Season 4: for those who want to read that much-optional
Devils on Horseback: 1 & 2 (a two-part, two-ep story)
Fast paced horse racing and multiple murder reminiscent of "Midsomer Murders" (wow, what a fantastic ongoing series) so it's no wonder it features Jane Wymark (also "Poldark"), Barnaby's wife in Midsomer, but Emma, Bob's wife in this brewery/horse tale. Henry and Margaret Crabbe go to the races with cider baron Bob. A corpse is found in a horse trailer of Bob's brother Tony, Larkhill Stables. Crabbe is assigned the investigation and another body appears. Bob's daughter is suspect and is caught with a bag of $$. Is Liz's stash betting wins? Are races being thrown? Why's Crabbe's wife involved? Meanwhile back at the restaurant Nicola & Gary mix sugar due to Stella Jackson's appearance. Stella played by Keeley Hawes (MI-5: "Ashes to Ashes").

3 Chinese Whispers
Continuing racial prejudice toward a Chinese carry-out doesn't fool Crabbe. Why the attacks? Will Crabbe have time to solve this mystery while cooking up a winner 3-course for a London food competition? Plenty of food plot with crime, but no pie recipe. Bloody poor sport! ' Obese Crabbe got his recipe desire in the story.

4 New Leaf
Fisher assigns Henry to guard mob witness Sasha, Lynsey Baxter ("Peak Practice""The French Lieutenant's Woman"" Doc Martin"see that one) the ganster's wife. DCI harding is ticked off. He wanted the guard job. It's a battle between Harding & Crabbe and all cooks know oil & water don't mix. There's drug growing; herb harvest, & assassination: a recipe for delicious crime mystery. Henderson's former boss, nasty Vicky (Amelda Brown-`Hope and Glory''Little Dorrit''The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes''Harry Potter'-on & on) plays havoc in the lives of Crabbe and Henderson.

5 Breaking Bread
About eating rolls, rolling over land, canteen roll-over,...well...Fisher changes the police canteen to vending machines. Copper's donut supplier is changed badly and buns are big business. Look at Crabbe's. Crabbe's appalled and sabotage reigns. Previous cop-canteener Tom & bread maker Flora are suspect. Fisher looks for cooked books by the new canteener to get out of the contract. Crabbe seeks a food assassin. How will this buns caper come out in the end?

6 Gary's Cake
Armed crooks attack Pie in the Sky diners bagging jewelry. DS `Jerk' Slater thinks it an inside job. Accused: Gary, Nicola, and her new boyfriend Paul. Gary's a bit jealous of Paul. OK, a lot! As much action in the kitchen as jewelry heisting in the dining room. Crabbe begins his own look into this café caper. Crabbe will solve the mystery and Gary will celebrate in a special way. And expect to be set up for Series 5. Can't wait.

I LOVE THIS SERIES...EVEN WITHOUT RECIPES. And Crabbe proves obesity is not just American. If you begin by watching Series 4, you will desire 1,2 & 3 too.

SOME FINE DINING COMBINED WITH GOOD MYSTERIES AND DETECTIVE WORK 31 Jan 2011
By GEORGE RANNIE - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Once again in Season four (4) of this delightful British series "Pie in the Sky", restaurant owner Henry Crabbe (wonderfully acted by Richard Griffiths) is doing what he loves most by turning out lots of very fine looking food in his restaurant while at the same time being a part-time detective using his keen intuitive skills to solve dastardly crimes that include "murders most foul".

To me, the six (6) episodes on two (2) discs running about an hour each in Season four (4) are most intriguing filled with delicious food, great mysteries that demand some good detective work from Crabbe and his beautiful assistance and are filled with lots of humor mainly supplied by his neurotic police boss, his wife (played delightfully by Maggie Steed) and the kitchen staff in his restaurant.

All in all, I really enjoyed Season four (4) of "Pie in the Sky" because it is filled with some of the things that I enjoy most in life (i.e., good food, British mysteries, humor and good acting)
