"Pie in the Sky Series 2,Part 1" a British mystery television series that happily blends cookery and crime, was made by the British Broadcasting Corporation. It is a police procedural/comedy/crime/drama that debuted on BBC1 in March 1994 and ran for five series. We have here the first half of the second season.

The show stars Richard Griffiths (The History Boys [DVD] [2006]; he's also featured in the Harry Potter films). Make no mistake about it, along with his everyman looks, the man can act. I saw him in "The History Boys" on New York's Broadway, and his performance certainly rated the Tony he won. "The Times [U.K.]" describes the show as "as much a pleasure for culinary enthusiasts as it is for crime fans."

Griffiths receives solid support from Maggie Steed (Shine On Harvey Moon - 25th Anniversary Edition [DVD] [1982]), as Margaret, his accountant wife, who's not all that pleased at suddenly finding herself a restaurateur. The rest of the company, led by Malcolm Sinclair (

If only they made programmes like this nowadays! Well cast, well acted, good storeylines and it has that vital difference from any other detective series. No violence, no bad language so by todays standards it's tame and escapist but what the heck. Good all round family entertainment
