Product Description

Review

"A pleasure to read as well as being a substantial work of scholarship." -- Andrew Johnson, Environmental Values "Immensely accessible ... Baker's study is witty, learned, sophisticated, and direct." -- Norman Bryson, editor of Visual Culture: Images of Interpretation "The continued value of Picturing the Beast lies in Baker's insistence that we consider animals more carefully, even when their appearance does not seem immediately significant (such as in children's literature, cartoon strips, advertisements, and news stories about politicians), that we ask questions about why animals appear the way they do, and that we think hard about how they might be imagined differently." -- Molly H. Mullin, Anthrozos

When I was writing my Ph.D thesis on the representation of nature in print advertisements, I found and read this book. Now I'm writing an article on human-animal interaction, I've returned and read it again. I think it's one of the most important books on this topic. If you are interested in media, cultural studies and environment, you have to read Steve Baker. I recommend also his other book "The Postmodern Animal" and "Animal" from Erica Fudge.

This was purchased for my son who is doing a degree in Photography and Digital Imaging. He found it a useful edition to his collection of reference books. Would recommend it for anyone writing an essay on the subject and needed quotes!

a nice & original study of animal imagery 24 Feb. 1997
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Picturing the beast is about the way animals are depicted in the media (cartoons, photography etc.) The thesis of the book is that such depictions partly determine the way we think about and treat animals. Picturing the beast is a highly original study and is recommended for anyone interested in media & communication, or the animal rights debate
A tool for better understanding human/animal relationships 1 Mar. 2015

I am teaching a course on Animal/Human relationships in visual media and this book is wonderful--I will use it as a text next time around. It is one of only a few books that directly address animals in visual media--all kinds--which is wonderful as a matter of educating on the topic. It is also fresh and informative---critical examination.
