Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

Selling his 3000-strong collection of hip-hop records to pay his council tax might have seemed like a tragedy at the time, but, as Picture That shows, it was probably the best thing London rapper Kai Motta ever did. Had it not been for his local authority, he would have probably wasted his days trying to relive hip-hop's finest moments. Instead he sought solace in his dad's old vinyl, discovered Grateful Dead and Bob Dylan, bought an acoustic guitar and invented the dark hybrid of hip-hop/folk protest songs that set his debut album apart from rap's rank and file. With not a break-beat or soul groove in sight, it's Stooges rock (Stage Is Set), Blockheads funk (Let's Rap), swamp blues (Hot As a Pistol), jazz grooves (City with No Heart) and country rock (Climb Aboard) that back his gravel-gargling jibes at the state of society, human nature and a music industry obsessed with teen-orientated plastic pop. For the most part it's an infectious concoction. But as refreshing as it is to hear rap with imagination, passion and a genuine message, Motta's unrelenting monotone bark--akin to a fired-up Dylan in a screaming match--doesn¹t always make for the easiest of listening... but then surely that's the point. --Dan Gennoe

2.0 out of 5 stars Hello, sorry to ruin it for everyone 22 Dec 2004
Most of the hype around this artist is becuase you average music journalist has a memory of ooh about 2 years.

This is basically a very poor copy of the stereo MC's (with pretty much every bassline coming from the stone roses), if you like this or feel that it vaguely does it for you then, turn round walk back to the Amazon Search engine and type Stereo MC's both supernatural and connected are awesome, however Deep Down and Dirty would be the one to get if you like Kai as it was virtually the blueprint that he 'borrowed' for this album

I have given this two stars becuase its rather annoying to hear an artist pretending to be original, however its still a lot better than the latest x factor wannabe.
