4.0 out of 5 stars Jennifer Anistons' shining days, 17 Sep 2009
By Dismal Angel "Ash" (Scotland) - See all my reviews

A fresh faced Jennifer Aniston shines in these two movies from the late nineties which came quite early on in her "Friends" career which thanks to which, she shot to instant stardom.

PICTURE PERFECT: Kate Mosley is a hip urban singleton of the nineties; she's a talented woman in advertising who is somewhat overqualified for the position she holds; striving for promotion she's yearned and work desperately hard for only proves to be more of a let down than her non-existant lovelife and irritating mother. Kate's boss feels that while she is talented, she's too much of a liability to promote; to put it quite simply Kate is prejudiced because of a lack of a stable romantic partner, a mortgage and settled future, meaning she has nothing in her personal life to truly commit her to the company and could fly to any other competitors.

Darcy, Kate's best friend and colleague, decides to meddle in Kate's business by telling their boss that Kate is actually engaged to a young man called Nick, in truth the handsome bachelor who was video-taping a friend's wedding to which Kate happened to be a guest; an incidental photo of Kate and Nick together gives the lie some credibility and soon Kate finds herself getting everything she could ever want, the promotion, her own office, and to her surprise, Sam, the handsome office scoundrel who she has secretly been lusting after for years, even starts to lust after her.

But what began as what she thought was a harmless and well orchestrated lie turns quickly into a nightmare when people begin to demand to meet Nick after he appears on national television after rescuing a child from a burning building. Kate has no choice but to invite Nick into her life, making a deal with him to pay him for his time as long as he keeps the lie up, then subsequently and publically breaks up with her at a work dinner. Where can it all go wrong?

THE OBJECT OF MY AFFECTION: Nina Barowski, a pretty and responsible New York social worker, invites George, a gay teacher who is victim of a sudden unexpected breakup with his doctor boyfriend Joely at Nina's step-sister's dinner party. While she herself is having relationship problems with her overbearing boyfriend, Vince (who is dismayed that she won't commit to him), she grows closer and closer to George.

Suddenly pregnant, she decides much to the chagrin of her boyfriend, that she should raise the child not with him, but with George instead. The idea seems to be working at first as she goes through the first few months of her pregnancy, and George is excited to be part of her and the unborn baby's life. As time goes on and on, Nina finds herself more and more drawn to the handsome and sweet George. The unfortunate thing of course is that George, while being undeniably charming and crazy about Nina, can never see her as anything other than a friend.

This is less of a romantic comedy and more of a romantic drama, but still a good watch nonetheless.

Two good movies in one case - will help while away a boring night or two.
