Book Description

29 Jan 2015 Geek Girl (Book 3)

“My name is Harriet Manners, and I’ll always be a geek.”

It’s the hilarious third book in the bestselling award-winning GEEK GIRL series! Now in paperback.

Harriet Manners knows more facts than most.

She knows that New York is the most populous city in the United States.

She knows that its official motto is ‘Ever Upward’.

She knows that one in thirty-eight people living in the US lives there.

But she knows nothing whatsoever about modelling in the Big Apple and how her family will cope with life stateside. Or ‘becoming a brand’ as the models in New York say. And even more importantly, what to do when the big romantic gestures aren’t coming your way from your boyfriend…

Does geek girl go too far this time?

The laugh out loud follow-up to award-winning debut GEEK GIRL and MODEL MISFIT will have you in stitches!

PRAISE FOR GEEK GIRL:

"Loved GEEK GIRL. Wise, funny and true, with a proper nerd heroine you're laughing with as much as at. Almost." James Henry, writer of Smack the Pony and Green Wing

"A feel-good satisfying gem that will have teens smiling from cover to cover, and walking a little taller after reading" – Books for Keeps

“I would highly recommend Geek Girl to anyone who likes a good laugh and enjoys a one-of-a-kind story.” Mia,Guardian Children’s Books website

About the Author

Holly Smale is the author of Geek Girl, Model Misfit and Picture Perfect. She was unexpectedly spotted by a top London modelling agency at the age of fifteen and spent the following two years falling over on catwalks, going bright red and breaking things she couldn’t afford to replace. By the time Holly had graduated from Bristol University with a BA in English Literature and an MA in Shakespeare she had given up modelling and set herself on the path to becoming a writer.

Geek Girl was the no. 1 bestselling young adult fiction title in the UK in 2013. It was shortlisted for several major awards including the Roald Dahl Funny Prize and the Branford Boase award, nominated for the Queen of Teen award and won the teen and young adult category of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize and the 11-14 category of the Leeds Book Award.

5.0 out of 5 stars The geek rocks 6 Jun 2014

Woo hoo! Harriet Manners is back in a gut-wrenchingly hilarious third book!
Harriet has a simple plan for the summer:
Get exam results
Go back to school
Phone Nick regularly
Avoid Alexa
But then her parents throw the bombshell at her and Harriet has to give up everything she loves... the Manners are moving to NY!
This book, as well as being funny, is also quite serious. Harriet hasn't seen her boyfried since, like, FOREVER, and she can't wait to see him again. But when Nick forgets her birthday, Harriet begins to wonder... is her boyfriend really who she thinks he is? Has she romanticized him?
Throw in a new modelling job, an over-eager teen stylist who disapproves of Nick, a boy who seems almost too good to be true, and of course the ridiculous antics of Wilbur Evans, and there you have it.
Geek Girl Book 3, Picture Perfect.
Enjoy!

3.5 stars.

Harriet is still Harriet - kooky, eccentric, loveable.
But this time the formula is starting to wear.

Set soon after the second book, when our adorable heroine has quit modelling. It's GCSE results time. Harriet and her friends are all nervous about their futures. But where is Nick on Harriet's important day? And why are her parents putting their belongings in boxes?

Her happy little world is about to get turned upside down. And just how Harriet copes with it is what readers of this series will be keen to see.

Except it felt a bit forced to me. It's 400 pages but it feels like very little actually happens. Alexa does her usual and initiates problems for Harriet. Nick hardly appears, smoulders from across the world and leaves Harriet to wonder how he feels about her (even though they are 'diary official' boyfriend/girlfriend'). And you thought her modelling career was over? Well, where would the books be without her clumsy attempts to infiltrate the fashion world with her factoids and terrible dress sense?

Everything makes it's check listed appearance. And I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it. I love Harriet. And I always learn lots of interesting facts from these books. But it felt almost like half a book, and bitty. We see her friends, her family, a tutor plot, a secret modelling assignment, boyfriend trouble, but it's all quite quick and fast-moving from one to the other. Harriet learns some lessons (with sudden moments of revelation after some quite stunningly naive and suggestible decisions) and stumbles uncannily back to where you want her. The plot comes to an end when I thought it was just taking off.

I have to say, I just love Harriet's parents. They are my favourite characters. I want them to be my parents!

I ADORE THESE BOOKS!!!

I can only apologise to Holly for taking so long to read this latest instalment of Harriets adventures. We have had it since it come out and Estelle whizzed through it laid up ill in bed .

I read this in one afternoon and just love these characters so much.

I laugh so much at these books that the kids ask me if im ok ?? lol

Harriet is so funny !! And her dad is my favourite dad character in any book and even more so now I know he’s based on Hollys own dad!!

We as very lucky to meet Holly in Feb and she is lovely and you
can see her personality so much in the words she writes.

I did several times say no what are you doing as Harriet does like to get in some sticky situations!!

I think every school should have these books because as well as being funny and easy to read I think they have important message…BE YOURSELF ! LOVE AND EMBRACE WHO AND WHAT YOU ARE .

Both me and Estelle love these books which I think is brilliant so thanks Holly for writing such awesome books ….so quick get back to writing more ….!

I have read the first two books in this series and I have loved them both. But this one is the best book ever. Love, friendship and shocks all come in this daring tale. Harriet Manners is still the geeky teenager she was but this time she feels grown up. Unfortunately for Harriet things don't go according to her plans. As I said before, I loved this book and I hope Holly writes another Geek Girl book!
