comprehensive and informative,
By Caroline Corfield (Newcastle) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Pictish Symbol Stones of Scotland (Rcahms) (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful book even if you are only mildly interested in the Picts or Scottish archaeology. It is fascinating to read, in the various introductions, how long scholars and communities have recorded and treasured these signposts to the past. The images themselves are mostly photographic, but even the hand drawn allow you to see pieces long lost and to build up a picture of the visual language the Picts used across the landscape of Scotland. It is a beautiful reference book and also worth reading before you intend to visit Scotland as you might just be able to see some of these stones in situ and re-connect with another age.

This is an excellent record and guide to the Pictish symbol stones in Scotland. It is of the high standard you would expect of the Royal Commission and I like the drawings as well as the photos of the stones .It is well indexed and is recommended for anyone interested in the stones or visting them , although the book is of a size not easy to carry in the field.
