Product Description

Product Description

Pocket sized, full colour guide describing car tours, walks and countryside picnics, all illustrated with photographs and large scale (1:50,000). Dubbed the 'Blue Bibles' by the Sunday Times, the Sunflower Landscapes series aims to get visitors away from the crowded tourist centres and out into the countryside, by car or on foot. On line update service for alll the latest information. The Picos de Europa, one of Europe's last mountain wilderness areas, are the high point of a long ridge of mountains which runs along the north coast of Spain, the Cordillera Cantabrica. Ranging in altitude from 150m to 2648m (about 500-8700ft), the Picos are divided into three spectacular limestone massifs separated from one another, and from the surrounding ranges, by precipitous gorges - a truly spectacular area in which to walk or tour. This guide contains a wealth of information about the dazzling array of plant and animal life you can expect to see when exploring the range. The author, an all-round naturalist and corresponsent for BBC Wildlife, has also contributed to "Spain - the Rough Guide". Tereda Farino has been living in the Picos de Europa for over twenty years. 'We have walked and climbed in the Rockies and the Himalaya, but the Picos are unique, and we are so glad that we went. Your book contained so much information, together with the beautiful pictures and the very useful maps, that we felt we were really getting under the skin of this part of Spain. (M.H., Glos.). Your walks took us through flower meadows awash with fragrance, buzzing with insect life and clouds of butterflies, through sleepy villages lined eith cherry trees so heavily laden that fruit fell to the ground untouched, and up through steep mountain gorges with goats and donkeys for company. Thank you so much. (S.P., Harrogate).

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth buying, 4 July 2007
We were really glad we had this book on our recent holiday. It contains a range of walks around the area (mostly 4 - 5 hours) along with a suggested car touring route. The author also includes 'short walks for motorists' (about 2 hours) based on the touring route - ideal for breaking the journey and getting into the countryside you're seeing from the window. We also did a couple of these on days with less promising weather, after relaxing or sightseeing in the morning.

Many of the walks are established routes which you could probably find out about locally. However, this book saves time investigating and gives very detailed and accurate descriptions. We weren't disappointed with any of the places it led us. Apparently 'updates' are available via the publisher's website, though we didn't find anything out of date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without this, 13 April 2009

This review is from: Picos de Europa: Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes) (Paperback)
The Picos de Europa are not all that well known, and many of the guides available are intended for more serious walkers. The Sunflower series has another triumph here. Walks are pitched just right for average walkers to enjoy. The Cares Gorge is a "must", and Bulnes is made easier by going up in the funicular, then walking down. The mapping is most useful as it's not easy to buy maps of the area with hiking trails marked.Car tours, picnic suggestions and short walks all add to the enjoyment. The Picos is not the easiest of destinations to get to, but this little book will make you glad you made the effort!

5.0 out of 5 stars walking ih the Picos, 8 Dec 2009

This review is from: Picos de Europa: Car Tours and Walks (Landscapes) (Paperback)
This book was an excellent aid to finding walks, off the beaten track with stunning scenery, that you otherwise may not have found. The times given for the duration of the walks are a little optimistic especially when you want to stop to take in the stunning scenery. There is much to see in the Picos and this book helps to give structure to any visit without being ''touristy.'' The Picos in places is very much a tourist area but with the aid of this guide you can find superb locations off the beaten track. Be aware that if the guide says a walk is more challenging then it certainly is - walking boots and sticks advised.
