Book Description

17 Nov 2010
Everyday life with an African Grey Parrot seen through the humorous and often twisted mind of his owner, Georgi. Her interesting perspectives on animal intellect and unique insights into nature take the reader on a thought provoking, entertaining and often hilarious ride. The star of the book, Pickles, takes his adventures in stride with wit and charm. Pickles is an intelligent parrot who constantly challenges Georgi to keep up with him, both physically and intellectually. His demanding, outspoken yet fun loving attitude places both himself and his owner in some very amusing, and sometimes embarassing, situations. Georgi touches a bit on nature, as it pertains to Pickles when he is outside in his aviary - their beautiful yard, trout pond and wild birdlife. She speaks of the trials and tribulations of owning a parrot - diet, behaviour and bird intellegence - but for the most part, this book is about the antics of a parrot who thrives on attention and mischief.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a wonderful, fun book! 4 Jan 2011
This book is great! It tells the story of Pickles the parrot from when he was collected by his new 'mom' until 8 years later ie now. It describes all the learning curves taken by both Pickles and his family and is a joy to read. As someone who has an African Grey myself it was fascinating to read about Pickles 8 years with his family. It has been difficult until recently to find good interesting books on parrots so this book is a joy to find.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splendid book - highly recommended! 27 Dec 2011
By Jani
This book is a must-read for anyone with a parrot, or who is thinking of getting one. If you already have a companion parrot, you'll recognise a lot of the behaviours Pickles exhibits, if you don't it will give you ample warning of what you are getting yourself into!

Pickles is a loveable, crazy bird and his personality comes over in a very accessible way in this book, showing you just how clever (and naughty) African Grey parrots are. It also has useful insider tips on how to care for these birds - no easy task - and some of the challenges you might encounter.

A funny, well written and highly enjoyable read, I'm looking forward to reading the sequels very soon!

Pickles The Parrot: A Humorous Look at Life With an African Grey

This book is so laugh out loud funny you will need to blink through the tears in your eyes to read it. The fishing tips will actually help and the story will give you some alone time with your feathered friends. I recommend you buy and recommend that you read it aloud to any pet bird you have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fishing advice from a parrot? 4 Mar 2011
By Terre Spencer - Published on
You betcha! I read this book aloud to my two parrots and laughed so hard through the story of Pickles giving fishermen advice on bait I dropped the book twice. Who says a parrot cannot know anything about fishing? Pickles sure does!

In fact, Pickles has advice/an opinion on nearly everything and this slim volume will entertain and delight every reader who has ever seen a pet parrot deftly manipulate their humans into complete compliance. And then equally deftly begin on everyone else they come in contact with.

Deliciously funny and chock full of stories well-told, Pickles the Parrot is about negotiating relationships between quite different species, parrots and humans. Always warm and peppered with humor, the book kept me chuckling to the very end.

Pickles, you've won my heart and I look forward to more from you and your mom, Georgi Abbott, a gifted writer who should be getting at least a three-book deal posthaste. Pickles, you might want to nudge the publishers in your very charming manner, eh? :)

P.S. It turns out that Pickles gave excellent fishing advice. You will NOT want to miss one word of Pickles the Parrot!

What a wonderful little book! The author (Pickle's mom) is a great writer and clearly demonstrates the superior intellect of African Grey parrots as well as sharing her awesome sense of humor. I would suggest this book to every animal lover and even those who aren't!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great sense of humor 24 Jan 2011
By Sibylle F. Johnson - Published on
This is a well written book. The author obviously has a great sense of humor and I found myself chuckling or even laughing out loud many times. Being the owner of an African Grey, I could relate to many of the experiences. Other than entertaining, this book also contained many tips pertaining to parrot ownership. I'd definitely recommend reading it - particularly for those who are considering a parrot (should you?) or those who have parrots and enjoy the funny experiences of others ... Sibylle from avianweb

5.0 out of 5 stars Laughter, love, and learning all in one! 2 Jan 2011
By Tamber R. Buxton - Published on
The story of Pickles and his human counterparts as told by his mom, Georgi. This book is a charming narrative of the life shared between the ever humorous and clever Congo African Grey Parrot, Pickles, and his parents. The adventures of Pickles are conveyed with genuine warmth and laugh out loud humor. This book is an absolute for anyone who is fascinated with the bonds between humans and animals as well as the sophistication of avian communication. You can't turn the page without the reward of a smile throughout!
