Product Description

London 1816 is heaving with every step of society. There are the rich, living in their fine houses, their mansions and their palaces, and there are the poor, living in hovels and squalor.

Pickit is 18 years old. Abandoned at birth, he was unlucky enough to be found by a woman who lived off the criminal activities of her charges and the lad only escaped her clutches after her untimely demise.

He picks locks and he picks pockets, he thieves, steals, and lives on the edge. Underneath a hard, streetwise exterior lies a boy with compassion and heart.

Colonel James Robert Tyler. Born 1790. His Mother died when he was thirteen and his father, a successful merchant, remarried. James had to leave and make his own way in life after a series of arguments with his stepmother. He was fifteen years of age.

James joined the army in 1806, when he was sixteen, and made the rank of Colonel in 1813. He survived the Battle of Waterloo after serving under Sir Arthur Wellesley, The Duke of Wellington, and returned to London. He became a wealthy man when his best friend died in the battle and left to him his entire estate.

Their paths should never have crossed but fate had other ideas...

Atmospheric, vivid, spirited - the author whirls us between both sides of early 19th. century London - from the grim poverty and lawlessness of the slums - to the wealth and elegance of the "upper classes"- and weaves an exciting tale of intrigue, murder, revenge and retribution - with a simply brilliant recreation of Waterloo for good measure! Multi layered and stylishly written, with many plot twists and a great sense of historical mood , this entertaining novel gallops along to its satisfying conclusion with enormous verve and brio. Great stuff. Highly recommended!

Enjoyable read 15 Feb 2012

I found this book when it was offered on the Kindle Nation Daily freebie list. Because I like historical fiction from this time period, I decided to give it a chance, and I'm glad I did.

The title character, Pickit, is a likable and resourceful young street urchin. He's from the seedier parts of London and had been shifting for himself since the age of 12 by whatever means necessary, sometimes in the employ of a good-hearted and generous smuggler.

Pickit saves the life of a newly returned veteran of the Peninsular war who was being chased by some thugs. He later helps him again with a problem of an entirely different nature and is amply rewarded for his efforts. There's satisfying ending, but I won't spoil it for others by going into any detail.

Pickit's life is likely similar to what the young Richard Sharpe's life might have been had he not joined the army.

I enjoyed it.
