Book Description

19 July 2011
Living in St. Jude, a 110-year-old dying city on the edge of the Mississippi, is tough. But when a letter informs fourteen-year-old Cinque Williams of the passing of the father he never met, he is faced with an incomplete past and an uncertain future. A curse meant for his father condemns Cinque to a slow death even as it opens his eyes to the strange otherworld around him. With help from the ghost Willy T, an enigmatic White Woman named Iku, an African Loa, and a devious shape-shifter, Cinque gathers the tools to confront the ghost of his dead father. But he will learn that sometimes too much knowledge can be dangerous — and the people he trusts most are those poised to betray him!

5.0 out of 5 stars Ghost 12 Jan 2013
By MaryAnn - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
What a fun read! I love fantasy, but have become discouraged at how dark and depressing many of the stories have become. This book was an adventure that made me grin as well as shiver in anticipation. Milazzo doesn't throw in pointless gore or drama. It's just a great story line with characters I cheered for!

Absolutely loved the book. Read it from cover to cover in a day and I want MORE!!! Interesting characters and good plot with nice twists. Now one of my new favorite authors! I recommend this book.
I was given this book from GoodReads.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best dispplays of writing in a long time! 10 Feb 2013
By Michael J - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The author Tone Milazzo, which when I first heard his name brought me back to the 90's with the rapper Tone Loc and the one hit wonder song, "Funky Cold Modena," which was a good thing, because sometimes I find myself singing that song to this day. Anyway, this book was phenomenal, it was some of the best writing I have read in a long time. In these times of authors mass producing books faster than people can read their last one, you can tell Tone took his time and has a mastery for words and telling stories. From the main character Cinque Williams to the ghost Willy T, you could feel what every one was thinking as if you were that person at that moment. The descriptions of the scenery, and the who, what, where, when, how and why was all there in a mastery of finesse. The story Tone tells takes you through many emotions that you can imagine that 14 year old Cinque is going through every moment of the book as if you were 14 again. Visualizing the words is easy with the talent of the author. I did receive this book free as a giveaway, but I am telling the truth, as I always do, about this book and the amazing talents of Tone Milazzo. 5.0 out of 5 stars a gritty and emotional quest with lurking wicked creatures 12 Jun 2014
By Wendy - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This story surpassed any expectations I had and surprised me at every turn. A good mix of raw & mystic experiences wrapped in a boy's self-realization as he quests to find his identity by trying to piece together intimidating pieces of his unknown father's past. Plus, there were some very bad-ass supernatural characters, demons and creatures!

I deeply identified with Cinque's desire to understand himself and his impulsive assumptions that his own mystery could be solved by understanding the father he never knew. This was very well written and engaging. I am glad that I got to know this good kid and his family and watch him grow so authentically. It's emotional, nostalgic, mystic and wicked!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not your usual voodoo story 16 Jan 2012
By Justin R. Macumber - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed PICKING UP THE GHOST more than I thought I would. The story of Cinque, a young urban kid, trying to find who he is and where he comes from in a dying city starts off rather slow, and for the first fifty or so pages I struggled to keep reading. But, once Cinque's life is shaken by a traumatic event and he learns of the reality of voodoo, the story picks up steam and starts to ramble forward on more interesting wheels. By the time it was over I was thoroughly enjoying Cinque's story and wanted to know where it was headed next. Great job, Mr. Milazzo.

Two issues I had with the formatting (I read it on Kindle):

The text wasn't fully justified on the right.

There are frequent British spellings of words such as "colour," but the character isn't British, and it doesn't take place there, nor did I buy it from Amazon UK.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantasy adventure in a whole new setting! 19 Mar 2012
By april h - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Venturing into urban territory is risky but well done by Mr. Milazzo in this fantasy novel about a young boy, Cinque, in a town passed over by the American Dream, whose father's death sets off a creepy, fantastical, and sometimes disturbing adventure to find his place in the world and trust in himself. Cinque's character is well developed and well written. All the characters and settings Cinque encounters are also intriguing, beguiling, and superbly narrated.

This is almost a first foray into fantasy literature for me, and I think keeping it here on earth (rather than some galaxy far, far away) made it very enjoyable for me!
