On Picket Duty and Other Tales (1884) is a collection of short stories by Louisa May Alcott that are mostly didactic and moral in tone. On Picket Duty deals with a group of soldiers on guard duty who discuss their courtships and marriages. The Death of John is a real story of a morally hurt soldier's last night. The King of Clubs and The Queen of Hearts, and The Cross On The Old Church Tower, are also included in this collection.

About the Author

Louisa May Alcott was both an abolitionist and a feminist. She is best known for Little Women (1868), a semiautobiographical account of her childhood years with her sisters in Concord, Massachusetts. Alcott, unlike Jo, never married: ''... because I have fallen in love with so many pretty girls and never once the least bit with any man.'' She was an advocate of women's suffrage and was the first woman to register to vote in Concord, Massachusetts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dated but nonetheless touching 19 Jun 2012
By MamaSylvia - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
eBook downloaded free from Gutenberg. Short collection of short pieces, set during the Civil War. Besides the title piece, The King of Clubs and the Queen of Hearts, The Cross On the Old Church Tower, and The Death of John (labelled a true story) are included.

Although quite dated, this collection will remind the reader of Alcott's skill at tearjerkers. The Death of John seems to be an expanded version of a story included in Hospital Sketches. Keep a box of kleenex handy when reading this! Spelling and grammar were acceptable, formatting was occasionally a little wonky but not to the point that it distracted me from the story.
3.0 out of 5 stars Short storys 31 Jan 2013

3 short stories, one of which is a republishing of part of hospital sketches. The main soldier in each story dies. Luckily for the most part not as preachy as some of her other works.
