4.0 out of 5 stars A Leave You Smiling Book 5 Dec 2012

Some are corny. Some make you laugh out loud. Some really might work!- especially the laugh out loud ones. A leave you smiling, cheerful book.

2.0 out of 5 stars They MIGHT Work - When Hell Freezes Over 22 Mar 2012

Decades ago, I was working in a piano and organ store. The pretty young thing came in to buy some books of music because her grandma had just given her an old piano. Unfortunately, the store had run out of bags, so when she bought several books, I apologized for that lack, and joked that I'd be glad to carry them home for her. She laughed, and she smiled - and the smile was a real winner. I glanced at her hand. No ring. I then said I notice that there was no ring on her finger; if I asked her out, would she be inclined to go? Six months later, I placed a ring on her finger, at the front of a church full of friends and family.

So I'm not going to say that it's impossible to win fair maiden, starting with a clever line. On the other hand, these lines aren't particularly clever. They also miss the point. A bon mot gives you an opportunity to start a conversation. It's not supposed to get you in her heart or in her panties, just get her attention. Most of the pickup lines in this book are too contrived. They say, "I'm more clever than you are."

Joe Girard, the "world's greatest salesman" wrote in "How to sell anything to anyone" that his basic approach is that of "you're a heckuva great guy, I'm a heckuva great guy, you need a car anyway, why not buy it from me?" And that approach works with women, too. I used to call up women I knew and tell them I wanted to see such-and-so a movie tonight, and didn't want to go alone, and was calling because I thought she'd be wonderful to spend time with. If she already had plans, I didn't take offense, and if she didn't, it was a choice between a date with me or being alone. I had surprisingly good results, and eventually learned that I didn't need the movie; all I had to do was tell her I'd like to spend time with her, and let her say yes or no without pressuring her. Confidence, not a clever quip, gets her to "yes".

That being said, this isn't a bad book. If you're stuck in a waiting room for an hour or so, it's slightly amusing, and you don't find yourself in a deeply involved turn of the plot just as the receptionist calls your name. But don't go thinking that this book will improve your love life; if anything, it will torpedo it.

this is just a list of really, really lame pickup lines. about one per page. If any woman falls for these, she's already passed out. Save your money.
I was hoping they'd at least be entertaining, or funny, but no. Just lame. and old. I'm 54 and a lot of these have been around since when I went to college.
