Product Description

Synopsis

'Lord Clive' bought his lordship at a 'Lord of the Manor' sale where titles fetch anything from two to two hundred thousand pounds. Why not buy another cheap and sell it high? Why stop at only one customer? Clive leaves the beautiful Jane Strachey to handle his American buyers, each of whom imagines himself a lord. But Clive was careless who he sold to, and among his victims are a shrewd businessman, a hell-fire preacher and a vicious New York gangster. When lawyers pounce and guns slide from their holsters Strachey finds she needs more than good looks and a silver tongue to save her life. A brilliant page-turner from 'the best of Britain's darker crime writers' (The Times)

From the Publisher

Russell James is best known for his novels of dark noir, usually set in South London, but this new book offers a change of direction and of location. Pick Any Title is a fast-moving thriller, offering laughs, shocks and something of a sting in the tail and is set partly in the USA, but largely in the rural west of England. Russell was Chairman of the Crime Writers' Association from 2001-2002 and is regarded among authors as something of a writer's writer. Imagine Donald E Westlake crossed with George P Pelecanos, with bags of Russell James's trademark snappy style and you'll have the idea. A great read, full of wit, style and thrills.

A great romp by a great author 4 Oct 2009
By Jeff - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
PAT is a very funny book. It revolves around a hustler who sells titles and peerages which are completely phony to suckers. However, like all bad things that work so good, there is too much of a bad/good thing, and when 'Lord Clive', the hustler goes too far, he has victim after victim chasing him in a madcap, hilarious farce. Especially since one of the people he has defrauded is a Mafia boss. James is a fan of the "There is never too much of a good thing" and he practices it clearly here.

There is some great writing and comic timing in here. It's really a comic sex farce much like a really funny play like "A Flea in His Ear" is.

Imagine Donald Westlake with a more devious and sexier edge and you'll get a good feel for just how fun this book can be.
