Review

"beautifully illustrated, engagingly told and a great companion to his other two books on Van Gogh and Degas. A great introduction to art and very highly recommended." The Observer

Product Description

Sylvette was a shy girl with many secrets. She dreamed of being an artist, but no one knew of her plans. One summer, the famous Picasso came to Sylvette's town, Vallauris. Amazingly, out of all the people in the town, Picasso chose her as his model. Gradually, Sylvette came to view the famous artist as a father and told him of her secret ambitions. This is the true story of Sylvette David, who modelled for Picasso in 1954. She now lives in the West of England, where she works as a painter and sculptor.

My five year old daughter received this for Christmas this year, and was utterly delighted with the story. Not too many words on each page, and beautiful illustrations, it immediately piqued her interest in this artist. So much so, we looked online to view some of his masterpieces and she has had to give his style a go. Suitable to read a child of at least 5, and the aproximate reading alone level of a 7-8 year old. We also have the Da Vinci book in this series and are looking forward to getting the others. A most excellent introduction for children!

Great story and pictures 8 Jan 2001
By M. Ragen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a wonderful book that we've read to our children for years. The fact that there is a true story behind the book makes it even more interesting for the adults who have been doing the reading. This book has particularly captivated our older boy. As we read and re-read the book to him, it was fascinating to watch as his attention shifted from simply listening to the story to observing how Picasso changed his representation of Sylvette over time -- and his questions about the art captured that change in perception. Together with the Classical Kids CDs, this series by Anholt has been one of the more valuable ways that we have introduced classical Western culture to our children.

A book encouraging self asteem and art awareness 21 Jan 1999
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book not only introduced the art of Pablo Picasso, but also tells a story of a young girl and her growing self esteem. As an educator, I found that this book captivated the children. The illustrations are beautiful. This book has an underlying message of courage and expression. A good book for all ages.

The 2,000th way of saying I love this book! 29 Feb 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I read Picasso and the Girl with a Ponytail. I liked how the author put real pictures of Picasso's art work in the book. At the end of the book, I liked how the author put some more real information about Picasso and Sylvette and put a picture of Picasso painting Sylvette.
