5.0 out of 5 stars unusual collection of paper roll ragtime music 5 Oct 2009
Format:Audio CD
Buying a CD of a `paper roll piano' playing Ragtime and Jazz music has to involve a degree of finger crossing. This CD contains Ragtime music played on a Pianola; where holes are manually mapped out on a paper roll and punched out by hand. Most of the music is by unknown composers which makes a pleasant change from listenig to Joplin being flogged to death. Some of the tracks are very clumpy; but many could be mistaken for being played by a pianist. For anyone wondering why you would listen to a clumpy old piano playing a paper roll; it's simple: you are listening to the music identical to how Edwardian/Victorian people would have heard it. This can make a pleasant change from a nice clear recording of a modern day pianist playing improvised modernised adaptations. Basically it makes a change from listening to Joplin. Surprisingly good.
