Koechlin's unique way of painting pictures with music 9 July 2014
By Erik Matson - Published on
Format: Audio CD
If there is one thing Koechlin does brilliantly in his piano music, it is blending heavy counterpoint into an impressionistic soundscape. His "Paysages et Marines" contain beautiful glassy chords, shimmering trills, and freely flowing harmonies which never become uncomfortably ultra-modern. They are a breath of fresh air compared to the musical pictures painted by Debussy. Where Debussy's music becomes murky, Koechlin's is crystal clear, but still as a picture of the cliffs by the sea, and the waves crashing against the rocks. Because, looking at a score of Debussy's piano writing, there are so many arpeggiations and chords bouncing all along the keyboard. But a Koechlin score reveals disciplined part writing which uses what I'd call a minimum of means to maximum effect. Anyone who thinks they have heard it all when it comes to impressionist music should pick up this album!
