Product Description

Review

The highly popular Piano Time series has undergone a full facelift. The most striking change is the new presentation: all Piano Time series books now tout bright and shiny colourful covers, with illustrations throughout. The pedagogics have seen minor changes too: content is ordered with a more natural approach to pace and degree of difficulty. Free supplementary material for the series is also included. Downloads comprise additional new pieces, a teacher's guide and a few MP3s of the pieces. Without a doubt, the most useful is the free-to-print PDF material, divided into two categories: extra pieces for the student, and duet parts for the teacher. (Alec Boulton, Music Teacher, Feb 05 )

It's brighter and even better says the sticker on the front of Pauline Hall's Piano Time volumes. And it's true! The tutors move at a good pace and both they and the repertoire books have added pieces and pictures with some particularly characterful contributions from Alan Bullard. (Pamela Lidiard, EPTA Piano Professional, Jan 05 )

Product Description

Piano Time 1 starts at the very beginning, with simple five-finger tunes for hands separately and together, many with duet parts. It gradually adds more notes and techniques to cover sharps and flats, simple scales and keys, and a range of dynamics and symbols.

Fantastic! 17 April 2011
Format:Paperback
When i joined secondary school in september 2009, i choose to start learning the piano. I am quite musical as i have played violin, recorder and guitar. This book was the one my piano teacher told me to buy and it is brilliant. It teaches you so well and there are some fantastic pieces in it that i have played and i think anyone starting playing piano would beneifit greatly from this book. I have vertially finished myself and have just ordered piano time 2. I am hoping that this is just as good as the first one was. PLEASE SAY THIS REVIEW WAS HELPFUL!

My daughter (6) uses this for her piano lessons and has progressed well. We switched piano teachers after we bought it and, although it's not the book the new teacher normally uses, she has said it's good so we've stuck with it. There are some really lovely tunes along the way and my daughter was really eager to learn to play them. The big bonus is you can go to the OUP website and download extra pieces to practise certain skills or for duets. You can also listen to a few of the pieces. This applies to all the Piano Time books. All in all good value for money.

I teach piano and have found that this book covers everything needed to teach young beginners, and my pupils really love playing from it. The book is brightly coloured and animated inside and out and contains fun exercises and puzzles throughout that help to build up their techniques and musical theory knowledge associated with playing the piano, or indeed, any instrument. Following these exercises are longer pieces that the pupil can work through in order to develop what they have just learnt. These include adding in new notes, dynamics, rests, chords etc. The book works at a very steady pace; it doesn't jump too far ahead but still challenges their abilities and pushes them further.

By the end of the book, they will have learnt about dotted rhythms, leger lines (and able to play over a three octave span), intervals and incidentals, and is the perfect start for beginners and to anyone preparing for their Grade 1 exam. I highly recommend this book and to accompany it, Piano Time Pieces 1: Bk. 1 is the perfect choice containing longer pieces without all the exercises.
