Peskanov is a proper pianist, playing on a proper piano - no honky-tonk here. (Nice to see the piano technician credited on the cover. Well done Mr. Campbell).
The playing is crisp, relaxed and elegant, with a little more persiflage than Rifkin's playing - but none the worse for that. The little embellishments (and they are small) here and there seem entirely in keeping with the music, tasteful and not at all to be decried in such pieces.
Naxos seem to be improving their sleeve notes in recent years, cramming genuinely useful information into a concise form, and that's the case here.
Overall, a great buy for someone wanting a first Joplin CD, and an interesting addition to the collection for Joplin fans.
