This is a good addition to the Joplin discography. The fourteen tracks cover many of the best-known 'standards' of Joplin's music.

Peskanov is a proper pianist, playing on a proper piano - no honky-tonk here. (Nice to see the piano technician credited on the cover. Well done Mr. Campbell).

The playing is crisp, relaxed and elegant, with a little more persiflage than Rifkin's playing - but none the worse for that. The little embellishments (and they are small) here and there seem entirely in keeping with the music, tasteful and not at all to be decried in such pieces.

Naxos seem to be improving their sleeve notes in recent years, cramming genuinely useful information into a concise form, and that's the case here.

Overall, a great buy for someone wanting a first Joplin CD, and an interesting addition to the collection for Joplin fans.

This CD by Alexander Peskanov is superb - in a different league to many haphazardly prepared Scott Joplin collections played by mundane musicians. Alexander Peskanov is a native of the Ukraine receiving early training as a classical pianist in Odessa, and later in New York. He has himself written half a dozen acclaimed books for the piano, and he has appeared world wide for many premier performances alongside the likes of American Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and Hong Kong Philharmonic - and on this CD in July 2002 he recorded the best known of Scott Joplin's piano compositions at the Performing Arts Centre, Ontario. Joplin always viewed himself as a composer rather than a Tin Pan Alley musician, and he carefully annotated his works to give specific directions to the pianist. Alexander Peskanov faithfully adheres to this approach and the CD is a superb demonstration of Scott Joplin's scintillating syncopations played as intended by the composer.

Scott Joplin lived 1868-1917 and his complete works comprise some 50 numbers - all are based on a blending of African-American and European styles to produce unique polka type rhythms and harmonious schemes. This CD includes his most famous basic rags as the Original Rag, Maple Leaf Rag, Pine Apple Rag and Fig Leaf Rag, plus less well known and smoother Country Club Rag and The Strenuous Life, and slower pieces as Solace and Heliotrope Bouquet. Also there are more sophisticated numbers as Elite Syncopations, The Entertainer, Easy Winners and Paragon Rag, and the lilting waltz numbers Pleasant Moments and Bethena. All 14 tracks are superb examples of the very best of syncopated ragtime, and together they provide over an hour of scintillating entertainment.

Rag collection 12 Mar 2011
By Ms. M. Potter TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

This release by Naxos of Scott Joplin Piano rags is a welcome breath of fresh air. The compositional originality of the Rag style and the masterly ability of Joplin are worthy additions to the Naxos catalogue that is usually associated with Classical Music.

With this style of music we find many riches among the rags. Joplin usually stays within 16 bar phrases in his compositional style as he expresses conceptual originality and elegence. The structure of composition is melodic and harmonic with great inventiveness.

Joplin had a wide variety of interests in music and composed in more styles than just Ragtime. He composed two operas, a ballet and two orchestral works as well as other styles. However he shines most bright with his expert ability at Ragtime. The freely syncopated and extraordianrily inventive Piano Rags are very hard to dislike.
Alexander Peskanov performs on piano and does an excellent job of interpreting Rags such as the "Maple Leaf Rag" and "The Entertainer" These are the most famous pieces by Joplin. The Maple Leaf Rag was popular in Joplin`s lifetime and the Entertainer became famous through the film "The Sting".

This is a most enjoyable album and the performance and sound are both first class from Naxos. The recording is a Digital recording from 2002.
I highly recommend this release and also the second release that followed this one called Piano Rags 2.
