Format: Audio CD
One of the great concert-going experiences of my life was hearing Earl Wild play a solo recital. In it he played couple of encores from his 'Seven Virtuoso Études' based on popular songs of George Gershwin. Wild, who died this past January at the age of 94, was a virtuoso of the highest kind and he was a marvelous composer as well. On this disc we hear some of his Gershwin-based compositions, but we also hear his Piano Sonata, written in 2000 at the age of 84. The latter, recorded in the year of its composition by Wild 20th & 21st Century Piano Sonatas, is a three-movement work whose movements are jazzy, based as they are on a jazz march, a blues and a toccata ('à la Ricky Martin', although I must admit I don't hear much in the way of Latin influence in it). The Sonata is virtuosic in the extreme and very easy on the ear. I has motoric rhythms in the outer movements and luscious bluesy harmonies in the gorgeous middle movement. I suppose pride of place ought to go to Wild's recording, but I have to say that young Xiayin Wang plays it with obvious feeling for Wild's idiom and I wouldn't want to be without either recording.

Wild had a particular affection for the music of George Gershwin, feeling that it represented the best of American music, popular or classical. He recorded a great deal of Gershwin, including marvelous performances of the Rhapsody in Blue and the Concerto in F George Gershwin: Rhapsody in Blue / Concerto in F / An American in Paris / Variations on "I Got Rhythm" - Earl Wild / Boston Pops Orchestra / Arthur Fiedler.

This is beautifully played and also clever music: Spot the Well Tempered Clavier references.. The Improvisations are catchy and sumptuous, repaying careful listening as well as on in the background. I was less taken by the Wild Sonata, but the rest of the CD makes it very worthwhile - just go get it!
