CD Description

The legacy edition of Piano Man, Billy Joel's 1973 debut album on Columbia Records, includes the 10-song original album in its entirety, re-mastered for this release, in addition to a second disc premiering the first-ever release of Billy's mythic performance at Philadelphia's Sigma Sound Studio on April 15, 1972. The concert includes three Billy Joel songs--"Long, Long Time", "Josephine", and "Rosalinda"--which do not appear on any other albums by the artist and, of course, the performance of "Captain Jack" which launched one of the most remarkable careers in show business.

If you do not already own the Billy Joel album "Piano Man", then I would recommend this purchase for the remastered studio album alone, which is wonderful and sounds great - fresh and sparkling. "Travelin' Prayer" is a storming opener, featuring superb piano and a great use of banjo. "Captain Jack" and "Piano Man", both of which can claim responsibility for Billy's breakthrough into the mainstream, are excellent pieces of music with lyrics which really draw you into the story. "The Ballad Of Billy The Kid" is a grandiose live favourite, fusing Copeland-esque classical bursts with rock. It is, however, the album tracks which make this such a worthwhile purchase, as many people will have hits collections with the singles on them already. "Ain't No Crime", a blustering blue-collar rocker, "You're My Home", a touching, beautifully-crafted ballad, the powerful "Somewhere Along The Line" and "If I Only Had The Words (To Tell You)", a heart-felt song of love and longing make this album a superb listen. In fact, there are only two songs which I would consider to be unremarkable on the whole album. It's a truly great piece of work.

If, however, you're like me and have virtually everything Billy has released so far and wonder if this is worth buying for the bonus live disc, then I can happily confirm that it is. In fact, what a great find this live show is! The second disc, recorded live at Sigma Sound Studios in April 1972, not only has some great live versions of songs from his debut "Cold Spring Harbor", with a few from "Piano Man", there are a handful of songs which are new to people who have all of the studio albums, too. "Josephine" is a brilliant, previously-unheard rock 'n' roll stormer, "Long, Long Time" is an excellent, rare Joel song and "Rosalinda" is a lullaby written for Billy's mother (it's fairly good, but not exceptional). The real treats are the band versions of the songs, which often have a slightly different arrangement - and the drumming is absolutely wild at times, especially on "Everybody Loves You Now". The most astonishing performance, in my opinion, is the final track, "Tomorrow Is Today" which makes one of my favourites from "Cold Spring Harbor" at least five times better. The way the band explodes into life halfway through... wow. It's one of those moments that I live for when listening to music for the first time. Sheer joy!

If you're a fan of Billy Joel, then you will not be disappointed by this album. So often bonus discs aren't worth the money, but you really need to hear this. Wonderful stuff.

Billy Joel's second solo album garnered good radio play and sales with the hit single "Piano Man". The remaster of the first disc is pretty well done (although the Mobile Fidelity SACD is the best sounding master out there)but the real reason to pick this up is the superb second disc--Joel did a live radio concert at Philadelphia's WMMR on April 15, 1972 putting on an exceptional performance with his touring band with selections from his first two solo albums.

This holy grail of live performances for Joel fanatics finally appears with excellent sound (it has been bootlegged over the years) and allows fans to hear three songs that Joel never recorded in the studio-- the exceptional "Long, Long Time", "Josephine" and a song written for Joel's mother "Rosalinda" (a different song from the popular Joel song "Rosalinda's Eyes").

The mastering here by Ted Jensen (and the remixing which includes some minor fixes to the tapes including the addition of a missing note and the removal of mistakes on one track by Joel's drummer at the time)is pretty good for the radio performance. Capturing Joel early in his career before fame began to overwhelm him and with his early touring band the performances are exceptionally good with Joel an engaging and charming performer. The song performances are separated out from Joel's introductions so that those who just want to hear the songs can program their CD player to skip the introductions or rip them without them.

We also get an excellent booklet that discusses the circumstances around both the recording of Joel's second album as well as the radio show performance and how it occurred.

I'm hoping that at some point the other albums will get deluxe reissues with various shows added as a second disc but even if this (along with the deluxe "The Stranger" from a couple of years back) is all we get, I'm satisfied with both the quality and the pricing (this is priced the same as a single disc release)of this set.

Worth the price for the sonic upgrade to the WMMR show... 10 Nov 2011
By D. J. Krug - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
First, if you have never heard the Sigma Sound/WMMR concert before, stop reading and order this. If you have heard it, stop reading and order this. The sonic upgrade is stunning.

Let me qualify my 5 Star rating now. FOR WHAT YOU GET, the material is 5 stars. The album remaster, while not perfect, is much better than earlier Columbia versions. My number one frustration with Billy Joel is the lack of new material for the last 20 years. My number two frustration is Columbia's management of his catalog. (There have been bright spots, like the Stranger 30th Anniversary Set.) But, the Sigma show should not be the second disc of a Piano Man Legacy Edition, it should be the second disc of a newly mixed and mastered Cold Spring Harbor Legacy Edition. And where are the bonus tracks? And lastly, what a gigantic let down when you open this package and see the reproduction of a Columbia Records invitation to a November 1973 Troubador Show to hype the Piano Man album. Where is THAT show (or one like it)?

Billy, give us some new music. And Columbia, give us comprehensive archival releases that befit one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 1970s (and early 1980s, for that matter).

I've been waiting for this record since 1972! 22 Dec 2011
By Dennis Wilen - Published on Amazon.com

As Music Director of WMMR in 1972, I booked, produced and mixed this Billy Joel Sigma Sound Show. I was pretty sure "Captain Jack" was a hit the night of live broadcast.

I became convinced when my mother, who was listening at home, called to say she didn't like that song about the suburban kids, especially the masturbate part and the mother makes your bed part.

BINGO! SUBURBAN TEENAGE ANGST!

The fixed drum flub is actually a relief to me -- it's been driving me crazy ever since then.

I am sad old friend Ed Sciaky, the WMMR DJ extraordinaire who announced the show, did not live to see this concert released officially. And I wish my mother was around to finally know this epic musical evening has reached the public, and I was at last credited by Sony/Columbia/Legacy.

Thanks to Jon Takiff for the great notes.

Classic Billy Joel album and a stunning 1972 live concert 8 Nov 2011
By hyperbolium - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
Billy Joel had a long career in music before his first commercial break with this 1973 album and its title hit single. He'd played piano as a studio sideman and recorded with several rock groups, including the Hassles and Attila, before settling into the singer-songwriter style that began with 1971's Cold Spring Harbor. With his solo debut having stiffed commercially, and label problems keeping him from recording a follow-up, he relocated to Los Angeles where he spent six months playing as a lounge pianist, writing new material a eventually returning to touring. Signing with Columbia, he released this sophomore album in November and cracked the Top 40 by the following Spring - more than five months after the records were released. The single rose to #25, but it would be three more years until Joel achieved massive acclaim with 1977's The Stranger.

The introspection of Cold Spring Harbor was mostly replaced on his second album with lightly- and wholly-fictional character sketches. The album's love song, "You're My Home" (written as a Valentine's Day gift for Joel's first wife) is also its most personal, though the title song is clearly drawn from Joel's tenure as a lounge singer. Narratives of travel and distance, as well as the line "too many people got a hold of me" (from "Worse Comes to Worst"), speak to the touring and travail of his early solo years. The album's sound was heavily influenced by California's early-70s canyon-country scene, mixing West Coast twang with Joel's East Coast bravura. The epic "Captain Jack" turned out to be the cure for that early turmoil, as a live recording from a 1972 radio broadcast became the turntable hit that sparked Columbia Records' interest.

The Legacy edition of Piano Man augments a remastered edition of the original album on disc one with a newly commissioned mix (from the 16-track master) of the 1972 radio concert that yielded the pivotal live recording. Recorded live in April, 1972 at Sigma Sound Studios, the concert was broadcast on Philadelphia's WMMR-FM. The audience was made up primarily of contest winners and the set list included six songs from Cold Spring Harbor, three that would be recorded later in the year for Piano Man, and three rarities from Joel's early songwriting catalog ("Long, Long Time," "Josephine" and "Rosalinda"). Joel is commanding at both his piano and microphone throughout the show, and his road band is soulful and razor sharp; together they deliver performances with more musical life than the studio versions of Joel's first two albums.

As Jonathan Takiff point out, Joel captivated a Philadelphia audience who knew relatively little about him, getting them to respond to songs they were hearing for the first time, rather than hits they'd come to hear. Joel showed himself to be a formidable singer-songwriter and a magnetic showman whose patter (including an impromptu station ID) keeps both the studio and radio audiences hooked. Those with bootleg version of the concert will find a few changes have been made, most notably drummer Rhys Clark's flub on "Captain Jack" has been excised. Those weaned on the original tape may take exception, but most listeners won't notice. The two-disc set is housed in a tri-fold digipack with a 24-page booklet filled with detailed liner notes and photos. The original single edit of "Piano Man" would have made a nice bonus, but that's a nit; fans who didn't have the opportunity to see Joel perform in the early `70s owe it to themselves to hear this seminal 1972 concert.
