ABRSM publications and recordings are extremely good value. The piano sheet music publications are the best value.
In an ABRSM you need to perform three pieces (plus supporting tests - scales arpeggios, aural and sight reading).
The piano sheet music usually contains 9 pieces of which you pick three. You have the option of playing other music instead published separately. The Absrm cd recordings usually contains quality recordings of all the pieces on the syllabus not just the 9 pieces in grade sheet music book. With several other instruments you may have to buy three different books per grade costing upto a total of £60 (I know I teach)
I recommend if you are sitting ABRSM exams to buy:
Sheet music book with CD (or download individual tracks from ABRSM online shop)
(new) Specimen aural tests with CD or get the ABRSM aural trainer on iOS (iPod etc)
ABRSM sight reading book
For piano : scales & arpeggio book but practise without book as well because you need to learn from memory for exam.
My top tip: get the Tenuto app on your iOS device to help with note reading, key recognition etc or use webpage musictheory.net/classic.82 . Webpage is free but think he asks for donations if you find it useful.. My pupils learn quickly using it.
When you've finished your exam keep the book, learn the other pieces to consolidate your level, use pieces you don't learn later on for sight reading for higher grades. Enjoy the music, keep playing them for pleasure , it's music making not just study!

My son is starting to work on grade 1, we needed the book and Amazon stock it cheaper than most places!! Having already put my daughter through 4 grades I would reccommend getting the book with the cd. You can hear all the pieces before choosing which ones to spend the next few months playing over and over again to learn for the exam!! You can also listen to how the track should sound, practice playing along simultaneously, and get it as close as possible, gaining as many marks as possible... Which is after all the whole point of using this book.

I would reccommend anyone sitting ABRSM exams to get the Aural training books too, you can pick up lots of marks in this part and it can be the difference between pass, merit and distinction. It seems too many teachers side-line this part of the exam...

My daughter has started to learn the piano this year & will sit her Grade 1 exam this summer. Basically, if you want to sit your Grades, you have to get the books! It provides 9 Grade 1 level pieces, from which you have to choose 3 to play in your exam. Pieces are covered by copyright laws, so no one can photocopy them for you, you have to get the book. You can opt for the cheaper book, with no CD, but the CD is helpful in getting the timing correct, once you have started to learn your chosen pieces. I would always recommend spending the few pounds extra for the book with the CD - it will cost around £50 to sit the exam, so you may as well give yourself the best possible chance of passing first time, thus avoiding expensive resit fees.

These pieces are essential for any pupil undertaking Grade 1 Examination. I also purchased the Teacher's Notes which is a great guide as to how the pieces should be played.

Daughter has chosen her Grade 1 tunes before her teacher has discussed it with her..... It is very useful to be able to listen to the tunes played correctly for choice and to compare with your own playing. Looking forward to hearing my daughter play them now!

needed for school, first exam. hoping my daughter will at some point be able to play any piece put in front of her, because at the moment she seems to be learning them by heart, not sure if she is cut out for the piano!
