As always with Lloyd: easily approachable

George Lloyd's output was solidly accessible throughout his entire career: though he took time off at the midpoint and didn't compose, he retained his voice. And that voice was pleasingly behind his times: while academic and cerebrally atonal music were the rage, Lloyd kept on in his very individual, approachable and totally melodic style. Both concerti on this CD are well-played and conducted...and if memory serves: are also the only recordings of these two works available. If you're interested in Lloyd's music, I suggest you try his 4th Symphony: written following the experience of WWII (he was severely traumatized while in the service in the UK) and it's felt by some (including me) to be near the top of his game.
And you simply can't go wrong with any of Lloyd's recordings conducted by the composer. Unlike far too many composers I can name (but won't) Lloyd was a highly-adept conductor who brought full justice to his own music as well as that of others. His recordings of his own music are first-rate.
