Who the prospective purchasers may be for a production like this I simply can not imagine. Listeners whose attention span is short have any amount of options available to regale them with Beethoven's Ten Greatest Melodies or such like. Serious listeners likewise are spoilt for reputable choices offering these two long concertos in full. Such listeners will normally take a modicum of trouble to choose versions to their taste. At the very minimum they will expect to be told who the participating artists are.
I have so far managed to ascertain that the conductor is Karajan, but not the names of the soloists. The disc itself and its packaging disclose neither. The pity is that the performance of the 5th concerto is probably rather good, and the same might be said of the 4th if you like it taken slowly, which I happen not to. And the reason I have to be so cautious and qualified about even these not very adventurous opinions is that the recorded sound seems to be filtered through cotton wool.
Is this a leg-pull by any chance? All I can suggest is that if you are confronted with this offering and considering what steps to take, make them big long ones in the opposite direction from this particular Global Journey.
