With sometimes slower tempi than usual, Buchbinder and Harnoncourt offer a measured approach to these monumental works. What is quite clear right from the opening bars of the First Concerto is that we are in for deeply considered and momentous performances. Harnoncourt draws a palpable sense of wonder from the Concertgebouw Orchestra as Brahms sets out his stall before the entry of the piano, and when his time comes, Buchbinder gladly extends that atmosphere. The mood is carried through to a magically played slow movement. Teldec's credits single out Gregor Horsch for his solo cello playing in the Andante of the second concerto, and with good reason, for he makes the most of one of Brahms' most poignant melodies. There is a strong sense that everyone--soloist, orchestra, conductor--is of one accord about how to get the last drop of musical worth out of this substantial work. The recordings were made live in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw in 1998 and 1999 and are blissfully free of unwanted audience noise. These are expansive interpretations of great, timeless music, getting to the heart of works that took the piano concerto to new heights. --Keith Clarke

Brahms back to the basics 14 Aug. 2001

Stripped from all late 19th and early 20th century`s tastes, which dominate the concert hall today, here we have a rendiotion that is clear, crisp and moving, not because of the stressing of romance but subtly, in musical lines that extend from bar one to the last, and in clarity an precision. Almost carefully the story unfolds as told by two storytellers that seem to complement one another in such a way that one is left completely to one`s oiwn resources. I was present at the live recording of both, which left me bare and naked emotionally. The disc can never completely capture the power of the live concert, but the result is the same. I have never heard Brahms like this.

Different from routine Brahms, but better? 10 Nov. 2005

My review is of the Second Concerto, but the same stylistic thrust applies to the First. This set is a reinterpretation of two titanic works that tries to bring them back down to scale and at the same time to rethink how an orchestra should play Romantic music in the post-modern age. For listeners in sympathy with those goals, this will be the most original Brahms concertos on the market.

Buchbinder makes a good show of the solo part, not really adding anything new but more than holding his own. He is not the most lyrical or heroic of pianists. Where this performance differs from others, as you'd expect, is Harnoncourt. He has ideas about Brahms that cana't be ignored. The strings play with no vibrato at times, the repeated accents in the Scherzo are clipped staccato bursts (I felt a little sea sick), and above all he inserts hairpin turns in sustained notes, a la Baroque and Rococco performance practice.

You will find these quirks either interesting or irritating. They at least add an element of originality. Otehrwise, Harnoncourt chiefly feels that Brahms shouldn't be overblown--this is most evident in the modetly phrased slow movement. I liked that, and the sweet Concertgebouw accompaniment throughout, but I wouldn't say that conducting quirks make for greatness.

I am listening to the second concerto as I write this and after spending the last 5+ hours listening to other performances. This is one of my top three favorite concertos for the 60 years.
The following is a consensus opinion based on this immediate comparison with other performances. Buchbinder simply does not rate very highly when compared to Serkin, Gilels, Zimerman, Askenazy, Bachauer, Helmyen, Fleisher, Rubenstein, Fleire, or Richter.
I have given this performance only 2 stars to dissuade buying when so many other finer performances are available.
If I could have only one it would be the Richter, although the Freire is very good and in much better sound than the Richter. On DVD the Zimerman and Helmyen are fine.
In any case, get someone's performance. This is a great, great work of art which yield growth in spirit as you get to know it.
Hope this helps the prospective, especially novice, buyer.
