When Van Cliburn won the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow at the height of the Cold War with his playing of this concerto, it created an international sensation. The recording followed immediately thereafter, and Cliburn was launched on an international career of unprecedented celebrity for a classical musician. Perhaps the attention was too much, too soon, given his subsequent burn-out and retirement from public life. Format:Audio CD

Van Cliburn's electrifying technique and frasing, combined by a riveting reading of Kondrashin, turn this one in to the gold standard of Tchaikovsky's piano concerto. The finale with the octaves is done in such an astonishing way that it seems even easy to perform. Yet, instead of blowing this part by doing it to quickly, Cliburn puts a joy and enthusiasm like I never heard before. The Rachmaninov was ok, that's why I only rated the CD with 4 stars. Had it had only the Tchaikovsky's concerto, I would have rated it with 6 stars!

This was a gift but I know the piece very well. Have the original 1950's Vinyl. Recipient was thrilled with the disc. Reproduction was fantastic (though CD's are never as good as the vinyl) and bonus getting the Rach with it as well. Delivery and packaging ace.

Van Cliburn, an American, died very recently (March 2013) a the age of 78. He won the Competition in Moscow in 1958, aged 23 and was the first non-Russian to win the event. Read more
