On the other hand, you can find on this cd a very interesting performance of the Paganini Rhapsody, full of colour and dynamics. Ashkenazy gives is best in the latest of Rachmaninov's works (see the Symphonic Dances, or the great version in of the Third Concerto, in this Ashkenazy-Thibaudet series).
Vladimir Ashkenazy is, of course, a major interpreter of this work as pianist soloist. Here, as conductor, he leads the Cleveland Orchestra in one of the most exciting interpretations recorded. His superb soloist Jean-Yves Thibaudet has obviously learned from "the master." Ashkenazy lets orchestra and soloist almost sound rushed, but he always reigns them in. He is, in fact, always in control and nothing is really rushed at all. And then in the spectacular, final movement the musicians hurdle breathlessly to the grand finish. This is, I believe, the Rachmaninov 2ND to own.
The sound (recorded in 1994) is sparkling and rich. The addition of Rachmaninov's RHAPSODY ON A THEME OF PAGANINI is a fine choice in a first class performance.
Thibaudet is probably my favorite of the current, young pianists. In this recording, he rocks. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
